The battery backup program is an initiative by DDS and the Regional Centers to provide backup batteries to Regional Center clients who have durable medical equipment that requires power. These items may include equipment such as power wheelchairs, oxygen concentrators, specialized chairs, suction equipment, etc. These batteries are given to pre-identified clients of the Regional Center system as a "lifetime loan" and are trained on how to use their specific battery backup in case of a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) or loss of power.
For more information, please reach out to your Service Coordinator.
*PLEASE NOTE: Eligible clients are being contacted directly by the California Foundation for Independent Living Centers (CFILC). CFILC will be reaching out to schedule a delivery date for clients to receive their backup batteries, and provide any trainings to the clients and their supports to properly use the batteries during an emergency.
SDRC participants who meet the following criteria will be eligible to receive a backup battery:
Are a current adult self-advocate (client) with SDRC above the age of 18.
Live in independent OR supportive living service (ILS/SLS) settings.
These are Residential Codes 13 or 14.
Live in a High Fire Threat Zone (click on the link to see eligible zip codes in San Diego and Imperial Counties).
Use Durable Medical Equipment (DME) that requires electricity to operate.
