These Handy Talkers and Communication Booklets are designed for the deaf community who are currently Regional Center clients. These resources can be used in an evacuation situation at a shelter (or an unfamiliar location) to help the individual communicate their needs with other people if a translator is unavailable.
If you are interested in obtaining a Handy Talker or Communication Booklet (in color or in black and white), contact your Service Coordinator to discuss availability.
SDRC participants who meet the following criteria will be eligible to receive a booklet and/or handy talker:
Are a current self-advocate (client) with SDRC above the age of 13.
Live in independent OR supportive living service (ILS/SLS) settings.
These are Residential Codes 13 or 14.
Live in a High Fire Threat Zone (click on the link to see eligible zip codes in San Diego and Imperial Counties).
Use ASL as their primary language AND/OR has uncorrected profound/severe hearing loss.
