America’s involvement in Vietnam began in 1950, during the French Indochina War, the name given to France’s attempt to reestablish its rule in Vietnam after World War II. Seeking to strengthen its ties with France and to help fight the spread of communism, the United States provided the French with massive economic and military support.

During the second half of the 1960's through the early 1970's, the Vietnam War was a social and political flashpoint. Exposure of the war on daily television news shows led to decreased public support for the war and of U.S. President Lyndon Johnson. Meanwhile, Americans became polarized into conservative "hawks" and liberal "doves," driving the nation further apart.

By the mid 1970's, America sought a way out of the hugely unpopular Vietnam conflict. The eventual U.S. troop withdrawal led to the fall of South Vietnam and victory for the communist North Vietnamese government. The war became something Americans wanted to forget and veterans and their service were ignored throughout the 1970's.
