After the end of World War II, the Soviet Union and the United States emerged as post-war "superpowers," whose actions affected the security of the world. The former allies became enemies, each mistrusting each other and their political/economic plans. Over the period between the late 1940's to the early 1990's, a "Cold War" existed between the two nations and their allies, with the threat of nuclear war looming over the future of humankind.

In the early 1950's, fear of communism spread panic throughout America. To some people, the "Red Menace" of Soviet Russia posed a threat to American values and way of life. Politicians, led by U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy, held committee hearings to discover the extent of communist influence in government and which Americans were "sympathizers." In this environment of paranoia and mistrust, careers were ruined and two people, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, were executed for sharing government secrets with the Soviets.

As people across the nation sought their own "American Dream," corporations used advertising to reshape their desires into a new consumer culture. With the growing popularity of television, Americans were now inundated with images of what to buy, what to eat, how to dress, and how to live. Adults were not the only people that advertisers targeted: For the first time, teenagers had "disposable cash" and became a critical consumer market; their fads and tastes were used to sell products ranging from clothes to cars, along with everything associated with the new "Rock-and-Roll" culture.
