I usually try to begin classes by saying hello to every student. I find that this helps me find a teacher presence in the classroom and it kicks off the class on good terms. I would usually then provide any announcements to the class and then begin the lesson with a hook. This is often a fun fact, historical photo, or an old song that relates to what we will be talking about in the class. I usually end the class with something that will bring the lesson full circle and remind them of what they have learned. The closure also tells me if I completed my learning goals. When it comes to managing student behaviour, I usually go silent. I do not have a yelling voice and I have found that being silent and stern with students usually resolves the situation. However, I'm not afraid to ask a student to leave the class if necessary and speak to them privately after a few minutes. I find that students are frequently responsive if you take the time to speak with them and have honest conversations about their behaviour.Â
