As a history and geography teacher, I feel that I have a lot of influence on students. However, I try to provide students with the opportunity to explore themes and topics and make connections in terms of culture. At the same time, I did feel that it was necessary to make connections for students or at least try to prompt connections. For example, when discussing the British Conquest, I tried to prompt connections by asking students why Rupert's Land and Acadia would be so sought after. Many students were then able to think back and make connections to past learning by giving me reasons such as, fishing, trade, and furs. I also tried to make connections to the present. We frequently discussed Quebec's French Laws and how and why Quebec has been able to remain predominately French. Students were then able to voice there opinion with more information.Â
