This was a learning curve for me and took some time to adjust to. Especially in history there are a lot of terms that students are not familiar with which means that I need to take more time to clearly define complex words for students. At the same time, I can improve in my own personal vocabulary when writing assignment outlines. For example, when students were asked to write a journal entry from the point of view of an Acadian, many students did not understand what a homestead was. I explained that a homestead was a house and possibly farm. It is sometimes difficult to remember that these students do not have the same knowledge and understanding of language as me. However, I'm continually making an effort to practice my use of language in the classroom and improve to make sure students are understanding.Â
