This module challenged us to think outside the box with various types of techniques and textiles, using them to create unique textures and sculptural shapes.
We were told to choose 2 themes and 4 pictures to create swatches based off them. Usage of unconventional materials and methods were encouraged. The two themes chosen were Art Movements and Nature and Ecosystems.
For the second part, we expanded on 1 of the swatches for the next theme, and integrated some concepts and stories within the swatches rather than just recreating images. I chose to expand on the 3rd Art Movement swatch, going more in depth into impressionist oil paintings as well as french rococo fashion.
CREATIVE TECHNIQUES IN TEXTILES PT 2
Inspired by both lolita fashion and french rococo gowns and oil paintings, (think marie antoinette), this project utilised and explored various materials, techniques and structures.
The swatches and final product dip into themes of femininity in the 1800s, beauty and its connection with gardens and the seaside.
Techniques used: Wigmaking techniques of using hair to make flowers, hair braiding, crocheted flowers and beta fish, hand beading, painting and dyeing, weaving, as well as patchworking and quilting.
Wire structure was used in the “jump” swatch to let the goldfish jump out of the swatch, making it look captured in motion.
Materials used: Synthetic hair, yarn, paints, fabric, lace, paper butterflies, wire, beads
