You will get access to the google spreadsheet to sign up for shifts.
You are required to complete 13 eight-hour clinical shifts.
You will need to complete 2 overnight shifts (11PM-7AM). One A pod overnight and one C pod overnight.
Overnight shifts are a fantastic opportunity for more one-on-one time to the seniors and attendings
You will need to work at least 2-4 weekend shifts
You will need to work at least 3 shifts per week to ensure an even distribution throughout the rotation.
You will work in every pod to ensure a diverse and full ER experience as the type and acuity of patients as well as attending contact varies with each pod.
You must work a minimum of 3 A pod shifts, 3 C pod shifts, 2 D pod shifts, and 1 FT shift. I encourage you to pick up a B pod shift as you are one-on-one with the attendings.
There are not that many B pod shifts, so please only sign up for 1 initially to allow other students the opportunity
We want only 1 student per pod unless absolutely necessary. During audition season when we have a high volume of rotators we have allowed for 2 students in A pod at a time (ex. A pod 7a-3p 2nd). However, please DO NOT sign up for these shifts unless no other spots are available. If there are a lot of openings in the schedule, you may be switched out of the “2nd shift” into another shift to accommodate the 1 student per pod goal.
You must work the full 8-hour shift. You may not split shifts.
When you sign up for shifts, please ensure that you comply with duty hour regulations (only one shift per day, at least 8 hours off between shifts).
It is expected that you will be present to sign out at the beginning and end of your shift.
INFORMATION ABOUT OUR DIFFERENT PODS:
Our emergency room is divided into pods (which we have labeled A, B, C, and D) as well as a fast-track area.
A pod is our critical care and trauma pod.
There are typically 2 attendings, a 4th year, a 3rd year, and 2nd year and 1st year residents in this pod.
The 4th year is acting as a junior attending and supervising the interns.
The 3rd year resident is the BEST person to follow when available as they are not also supervising the interns or off service residents
B pod is our lower acuity pod without monitor capabilities. This is run by one attending and one resident on the weekends. Great for one-on-one time opportunities.
C pod and D pod are similar in that we see a wide mix of patients in these pods.
C pod has a senior resident and typically 1-2 junior residents.
D pod is typically run by one attending and one senior resident
Fast track is run by a 2nd year and an attending and is where a lot of splinting and suturing opportunities will arise.
