Reporting and Writing

Throughout high school, I have taken on a diversity of stories ranging from features on influential educators and career professionals, to timely news stories, to general interest and entertainment stories. Furthermore, during my junior year, I started the Health Education Advocates Blog, where I published several stories about public health issues. Through this experience, I seamlessly merged my interests in public health and journalism, using my voice to educate others about the importance of public health education and health advocacy. While my school does not offer a journalism class, I have always thoroughly enjoyed my English classes and have taken it upon myself to learn the essentials of journalistic writing through online curriculums such as the Missouri High School Journalism Project and The Daily Free Press Summer Journalism Bootcamp. I am also currently working with my school's English department to initiate a journalism course to inspire more students to pursue journalism and express themselves through writing. Throughout my experiences, I have learned the importance of balancing objectivity with creativity to share information in a meaningful and unique way while maintaining the highest level of journalistic integrity. Furthermore, I have developed keen skills in researching and collecting interviews for my articles.

Feature Writing

In this article, I highlighted Mrs. Theys's educational background and teaching experience to welcome her to our school. I had a wonderful time connecting with her through the process.

I was connected with Dr. Isha Berry after I requested an interview through the CDC Website. We met over a Zoom call where we talked about pursuing public health as a career. I got to learn more about the work she does while also learning about possible careers in public health.

For this article, I reached out to the Administration for Community Living because I wanted to write an article about someone who works in social work and promotes diversity. Erin Long is passionate about caring for the elderly population, and I had a wonderful time learning more about her career while interviewing her.

News

During my sophomore year, I wrote this article to underscore the importance of fair and equal practices within the college admissions process

The rise of the Devious Lick trend took a toll on my school. Vandalism cases increased tremendously and more and more students were being punished. To cover the situation, I researched the trend and interviewed our school principal on how he believes the issue should be addressed.

Elmbrook Schools Cancels School For The Second Time This Week

Finals week is notoriously stressful, but after two days of school were canceled, the stress of finals week burgeoned. Since I was eager to publish this article as soon as possible, I had to talk to students in person instead of over email. Overall, this article was successful because it addressed student concerns about the snow days promptly. Furthermore, I used Instagram and our school's weekly newsletter to ensure that this article was read by students, staff, and parents.

Explanatory/ Research Based Journalism

This was a research-intensive article that I wrote alongside another writer in the Spartan Banner. This was my first time co-authoring an article. Writing this article helped me expand my ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with others.

Art therapy is something that has always fascinated me. I was highly interested in learning more about Art Therapy practices and their applications in health treatments. Writing this article tested my ability to read detailed research publications about the history and clinical applications of art therapy.

My article about Eating Disorder Stereotypes was recently published on Project HEAL's blog. Through this experience, I not only got a chance to get published, but I also received valuable feedback on my writing. For instance, I have added more context to introduce the anonymous interviewee to increase transparency while preserving their anonymity.

Arts and Entertainment

I authored this article for the Los Angeles High School Insider page. Through this article, I sought to highlight an underappreciated pioneer in the global pop scene. Through writing this article, I had to be flexible and adjust to the High School Insider's style of reviewing and publishing articles.

In this article, I covered topics that I was currently studying in my math class and wrote about the importance of e in mathematical applications. I enjoyed writing this article since it was lighthearted and required me to experiment with my writing style.
