Commitment to Diversity

The media plays a tremendous role in developing people's perceptions. Whether it be through implicit biases in reporting or algorithms that prevent underrepresented minorities from having their voices heard, the media is riddled with a longstanding history of inequity. Not to mention, the field of journalism itself has historically lacked representation. According to a 2023 Pew Research Report, around 76% of journalists are white. As a Pakistani-Kashmiri Muslim living in America, I have not only felt a lack of representation in the media, but I have not seen many people like me pursue journalism as their career.

From a writing standpoint, journalists and content creators must be diligent about what they write about and how they do so. To guide students on the right path, I have provided each staff member with a style guide that includes a comprehensive section on how to cover race, gender, the elderly, and other commonly misrepresented populations. Additionally, I always encourage writers to include multiple interviews in their articles to capture a multitude of perspectives and provide context for a situation in its entirety. On my own time, I have also covered topics related to eating disorder stereotypes, workplace diversity, public health, and the AAPI population, to expand the conversation of diversity in healthcare and the world around us.

To ensure that we represent the population of Brookfield East accurately, I created a do-not-cover list that keeps track of each student, faculty member, and club that has been interviewed or covered in the online or print magazine during the 2023-2024 school year. This list intends to ensure diversity in the topics we cover and the opinions we broadcast to our school's population. This list has also helped guide students toward story ideas that are unique and explore untapped ideas and viewpoints.

Sample Stories

Here are a few samples of stories that I have written that cover diverse topics and feedback I received. This is not a complete list of articles showcasing my commitment to diversity, but a select handful.
