Design

I had a very fun time designing this spread for our Winter Magazine. I used a computer-style font that fits the theme of the stress that students endure when planning for the years ahead of them. However, I decided to add a fun graphic to lighten the mood a little bit.

I created this design for our 2023 Spring Magazine. As a team, we wanted to increase engagement with the magazine and increase the average time students spent reading or looking through it. Because of this, we decided to add more games and quizzes to the magazine.

While journalism may be thought of as an art consistent with writing and words, the use of design and artistic creativity are just as important. As a traditional artist who enjoys painting and sketching, I have thoroughly enjoyed learning more about graphic design from my peers and educators. I work diligently to create unique compositions that correspond with the story at hand, whether I am designing for the print magazine, the online website, or our Instagram page. I keep various design elements in mind while creating my designs. For instance, I like to create visual hierarchies in my collages to guide the viewer's eyes. To create my work, I use a combination of Canva and Adobe Suites. Throughout the process, I always use free images of the images in my designs. I always consider the writer's input on how they would like their story to be portrayed through various design elements.

For this piece, I wanted to highlight the history of Wimbledon in relation to the 2023 Wimbledon Championship. I highlighted historical tennis champions in black and white while leaving the 2023 winners in color. To make the piece visually appealing, I used a contrasting color scheme of pink and green.

To increase engagement with the online website, I designed an advertisement for the print magazine.

I also make design posts for the Health Education Advocates Instagram page. Aside from my journalism-related design experience, I also have experience using design for competition entries like the Wisconsin State Parks and Forest Sticker Competition and creating infographics for class assignments.

Student Cram Presentation Designer at Fiveable

I was recently hired as a Student Cram Presentation Designer at Fiveable, which is an organization that focuses on helping students study for their AP exams. I was selected to create informative presentations for AP Precalculus Cram sessions in May. This year, only 9% of applicants were offered a position.

I designed this Instagram carousel post for a project in my AP English language class. We were tasked to research an underdog story and highlight their story in this format. I used subtle design elements to underscore certain components of her narrative. For instance, I added a map depicting redlined neighborhoods, while discussing the type of discrimination she and her family experienced. To make the finished product look more visually cohesive, I used the same filter on each image and maintained a theme by using the same fonts and color scheme.
