Law, Ethics, and News Literacy

Reaching Out To Local Journalists

This year, I decided to increase Spartan Banner's network by communicating with local journalists in the greater Milwaukee Area. I first contacted the Milwaukee Press Club to see if there were any ways to get involved with their work. I was soon connected with Scott Meyers, a producer at Milwaukee PBS and a member of the Milwaukee Press Club. In this meeting, I learned more about the work that Meyers does and his career journey as a journalist. He also invited the Spartan Banner to attend the Milwaukee Birthday Party celebration and connected me with reporters and journalists at the UWM Milwaukee NPR station to work on a joint project.

Recently, I was also directed to reach out to Mary Fischerman, the publications director of the Brookfield Living and Elm Leaves Magazine. In our meeting, we discussed how the Spartan Banner could contribute a monthly article to the Brookfield Livings magazine. I just finished up my article for the April magazine. I am excited to continue working with my local magazine.

Media Literacy Guide

For my AP Government final exam, I created a media literacy guide to help individuals make politically informed decisions. While this started as a class assignment, I often found myself connecting what I was learning back to my journalistic experience. I eventually decided to share the website with my peers in the Spartan Banner.

News Literacy and Ethics Kahoots!

I have made Kahoots about news literacy and ethics topics to help Spartan Banner staff members learn about the importance of journalistic integrity in a fun and engaging way.

Learning More From Professional Journalists

I have attended several webinars through the Northwestern Medill School of Journalism. Through these seminars, I have gained a unique opportunity to interact with student journalists at Northwestern and professional journalists.
