Excelling will look like: All students are exposed regularly to STEM-focused careers. A plan is in place with a focus on exposing students to non-traditional STEM careers through community partnerships and community needs.
The STEM program is all inclusive at Emerson Elementary School. Students participate in STEM instruction in their classrooms daily, including in special areas and clubs. Demographic breakdown can be seen in the graphs below.
Exposure to STEM careers is a goal of each grade level at Emerson Elementary, especially careers held by non-traditional genders. Students have learned from engineers, meteorologists, farmers, park rangers, veterinarians, and more. Our STEM committee, administration and teachers work to build relationships with community and business members. These relationships bring the real world into the classroom and allow students to see themselves in similar roles in the future. Students are able to connect STEM to their everyday lives by talking with and learning from our community and business partners.

First grade enjoyed a visit with the Etowah Valley Human Society. Bryan and Phoebe met with students in the school media center to teach them about animal care and animal habitats. Students were able to ask questions and interact with Bryan and Phoebe.

Fifth graders enjoyed a visit with WHS Medical Science Magnet. Students learned about microorganisms and saw an interesting demonstration about germs.

Sharryse Henderson, Biology Professor at Georgia Highlands College, visited 5th graders today to dissect sharks. Students learned about the various parts of the shark while completing this hands-on activity.

Students met with State Park Ranger Sean Kelley to learn about Agritourism in state parks. Students took notes and pledged to protect our environment. They even earned Junior Ranger badges!

2nd grade students had a TEAMS meeting with Woodland High School students from the AP Biology class and magnet program. Students were able to ask questions and learn more about life cycles.

Josh Trower and Amy Torrence from The Southern Museum provided 1st grade students with a hands-on presentation of how trains use magnets. Students learned about how magnetic forces repel or attract, electromagnetism, and how our earth is a big magnet due to its iron core!

Bryan and Phoebe from the Etowah Valley Humane Society visited Emerson Beta Club members. Students learned about the animals at the shelter and how the shelter runs. They asked lots of questions and gave Phoebe lots of love. Members helped load all the donations collected from Emerson families into the truck headed back to the humane society.

Second grade was joined by Keep Bartow Beautiful for two lessons – one on birds and one on chickens. Students took notes in their STEM journals during the lessons and had the opportunity to ask questions throughout.

Students in grades 2, 3, 4, 5 and our Exceptional Education program helped plant Persimmon Trees on Emerson's campus. Bartow Beautiful helped students locate a good place on campus to plant each tree and aided in the planting process.

Students enjoyed an author presentation and book signing with Shelli Johannes. Ms. Johannes is the co-author of the Cece Loves Science books. Students listened to her story Cece Loves Science in the library prior to her visit and were excited to meet a real life author!
