Our Primary School is a public body and has a long history celebrating 150 years in 2014. Once only a small village school, as the village grew, a new modern school building was constructed in 2017. We have a team of young teachers and a young and visionary leadership team as well. We have strong motivation, enthusiasm and support from pupils, parents and the community in our village. Our students and teachers can speak English and German, some teachers French as well. Currently, we have 450 students in years 1-9, 50 teachers and we are running a concept of a Community School. What makes our school unique is pupil participation and community support. The purpose of the Pupil Parliament is to intensify cooperation between pupils, teachers and school leadership. The aim is to involve the pupils more in the operation of the school, school events, and in taking responsibility for their behavior and work. One of the objectives of the project is to strengthen and develop democracy and civic skills on a pan-European scale.
Leikskólinn Rjúpnahaed is located in the municipality of Kopavogur. Kópavogur is Iceland´s second-largest municipality with around 37000 inhabitants. Rjúpnahaed began operations on July 1, 2002 and is a six-department preschool. The school has a total of 106 children, aged 1-6 years old, in 6 divisions. The pedagogical work in Rjupnahaed is characterized by constant development and the school´s teachers and staff are continuously looking for new ways and solutions to advance the learning of the children. From the beginning of operations Rjupnahaed has focused attention on the democratic culture within the school and the facilitation of democratic culture competencies. In fact, democratic culture is the cornerstone of Rjupnahaed´s work and permeates everything we do. The school emphasizes cooperation with children of different ages and thus, the same focus is applied in every division but the learning methods used vary depending on the age of the children in question. Children one to six years of age are being taught democratic culture with autonomy in mind and allowed to get to know it in their own way. At all ages, the goal is for children to learn to be critical, to respect themselves and others, to be responsible for themselves and their environment, and to gain more and more autonomy.
Salaskóli is a school made up of 580 students and 90 persons as staff. The age of the children taught in the school ranges between 6 to 16 years. Students in years 1 to 4 participate in class meetings where various issues related to communication and learning are discussed. The children often talk about the school grounds and also what they do in their free time, express their opinions and sometimes they come to a conclusion on suggestions and send it to the principal. Each year ́s group also has a reconciliation table where students can sit down and resolve disputes that arise between them. They have learned how to do that and can take care of it themselves. Once a week there are elective classes where the students can choose what they do. Students in years 5 to 7 also have class meetings similar to the ones being held in the youngest level. In addition to that, they participate in a school forum once a year where they discuss what is good in school, what can be improved and what they feel is missing and would like to see being done in school. They appoint a moderator and a secretary. They submit their results to school administrators.
