Standard 6 - Reading, Writing, and Oral Communication – The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
Team Meetings
6R) works with other teachers and support personnel to design, adjust, and modify instruction to meet students’ reading, writing, and oral communication needs
This connects to standard 6R by using school improvement days to collaborate with staff members within our school and district. Every other Wednesday our school district has school improvement days in order to work as a department or gather as a district to talk, create/share ideas, and provide feedback with one another. These days are helpful for teachers to modify any instruction and plan student needs into our lessons. I have learned to take advantage of these days by collaborating with other teachers and learn new ideas, in order to better myself as a teacher and my students.
Visual slides with demonstration
6J) selects, modifies, and uses a wide range of printed, visual, or auditory materials, and online resources appropriate to the content areas and the reading needs and levels of each student (including ELLs, and struggling and advanced readers
This connects to standard 6J by using resources in my content area for students who may need additional assistance. By providing my students with visual slides during our warm up, they can get a better understanding of what is being asked, as well as use it as a reference guide to refer back when needed. I have learned that some students are visual learners and comprehend given instruction better when using visual aids within the classroom.
