Standard 2 - Content Area and Pedagogical Knowledge – The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.
Accomodation/Modification Warm-up
2P) adjusts practice to meet the needs of each student in the content areas
This connects to standard 2P by adjusting our warm up in order to meet the needs of all students. It is important to incorporate all students within the lesson, so if we have students who are in wheelchairs or have certain restrictions, this warm up will incorporate different ideas that will help modify or accommodate all students. I have learned new ideas and creative ways to think outside of the box in order to engage all students. This will help students feel connected to their peers within the classroom.
Academic Language
2H) understands the relationship among language acquisition (first and second), literacy
development, and acquisition of academic content and skills.
This connects to standard 2H by helping ESL students navigate and excel within their academic domain. It is our job as teachers to align our language instruction with the demands ESL students will encounter and to hopefully target their learning experience. I have learned helpful tools that I can bring with me in my classroom in order to engage my ESL students in their learning such as modeling, repetition, and visual cues.
