Animations From Bursts

If you hold down the camera button on your phone while you are taking a picture, it will create what is called a "burst". This is basically a group of photos in quick succession. When you put a burst of photos in Google Photos, you can turn it into an animation.

Open the burst in Google Photos and then tap on the multiple images icon in the tool bar across the bottom.

Choose the "Create animation" option from the menu that pops up at the bottom of the screen.

Now you have an animation that you can save and share! Just tap on the sharing arrow icon to export.

Auto Back Up Your Camera Roll

I love the security of knowing that my pictures are automatically backed up to Google Photos just moments after I take a picture. It can really be a life saver if something awful happens to your phone or if you need access to a photo but don't have your phone with you.

Check your back up settings by clicking on the hamburger icon (three lines) in the upper left.

Then click on the gear icon in the upper right to access more settings and preferences.

The first menu item is "Back up & sync". You can click this item to open up all your back up settings.

Labeling People

Labeling people you take pictures of often can make it easier to find photos when you need them.

Tap on the Albums button across the bottom and you will see "People & Pets" appear in the top left.

You'll be able to see people's names across their pictures. You can tap on their picture to see all the photos you have of that person.

If you find someone you'd like to tag, tap on their face under the "People & Pets" section.

Tap on the"Add a name" link under the person's photo at the top of the screen.

Now Google Photos will remember this person and automatically tag all his/her photos.

Search Terms

You can search for things like objects, animals, and even colors and Google Photos will work it's magic and find them all for you! Give it a try!

Shared Albums

Organizing your photos with albums is very handy! It is especially cool when you want to share a group of photos with other people.

To create a new album, tap on the three dots menu in the upper right and choose "Album" or "Shared Album" from the menu.

Tap on the Sharing Arrow icon in the upper right. You can then share with someone specific, or choose to "Create link".

Deep Blue Filter

There are some really neat filters in Google Photos and a favorite is the Deep Blue Filter. It is a little buried, so we want to show you how to find it.

Open your photo and tap on the little "levels" icon across the bottom.

You will see filters open across the bottom. Tap on the "levels" icon again.

Click on the little downward arrow icon next to the color slider.

Scroll down to the "Deep blue" slider and adjust it as you wish.

The difference is subtle, but stunning! Look at the difference between these two photos.

Select Multiple Photos

Every click or tap matters! Google Photos makes it very easy for you to select multiple images and save a few taps.

Hold your finger on a picture to select it. Then just start dragging your finger and all the pictures you touch will be selected. That makes it a lot easier to delete or move a bunch of photos in a batch or use them with the special tools like creating animations, movies, or collages.

Beth Heyden (@HeydenTech)

When we asked all of you what you wanted to know about Google Photos, Beth Heyden had a great question! She noticed that Photos has disappeared from the left side navigation in Drive. She's right! It isn't there anymore.

We aren't sure if Google will be bringing it back, but it is easy to access your photos from Drive. Just click on the waffle icon in the upper right corner of your Drive. Click on Google Photos.

We also wanted to point out that anytime you try to insert an image into a Google Doc, Slide, Drawing, etc., you have Google Photos as an option. You have this option whether you insert your image from the "Insert" menu across the top, or the insert images icon on the toolbar.
