We are part of Section 2A. Our Section Race is usually held at Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis. Our section race date will be during the first week of February 2026 St at Theodore Wirth Park . Stay tuned for the exact date! This is an all day pursuit event. This Team is determined by Head Coach Mark.
The Minnesota State Meet is held at Giant's Ridge near Biwabik, MN on February 11 and 12, 2026
Skiers are encouraged to race and everyone should at least "try" a race each year. There are many opportunities to race at various levels: Varsity is the top level, then JV1, and finally JV2. Generally everyone skis a 5K course, but there can be alterations to the course and distance. We ski 14 male and 14 female skiers at the Varsity and JV1 levels.
The JV2 Level is usually open to skiing more than 14 of each gender and can be a fun way to race with friends.
Skiers at the High School Level: Grades 9, 10,11,12 are required to race TWO Times during the season at any level.
Racing at the Varsity level requires that a skier will participate in both skate and classic races. The 14 Varsity and JV 1 slots are flexible and placement is based on skier availability, previous race time, attendance at practices, and Coach discretion/decision.
Section Team: The Section Team consists of 7 Varsity Skiers per gender: 5 pursuit skiing skate and classic, and 2 skiers skiing the sprint relay. We also take 2 alternates per gender for each team and they need to be ready to ski and be at the section meet. The placement of skiers in the section is entirely the Head Coaches discretion/ decision. Team placement is based upon skier availability, skier participation/attendance during the season, full season race times, and Coach discretion. If two skiers are tied or close to tied (Total combined time in Lake Conference Championship Race of Skate and Classic of 10 seconds or less) the skier who participated more in practices during the season is the chosen skier. No discussion end of story!
For more lettering requirements see our Lettering Page.
A Typical Race Day:
Race day actually starts several days before the actual race date.
First, fill out a google document indicating your commitment to racing on that day. A Google Form will be available for you to fill out. After you fill it out you will receive an E-mail confirmation from google Forms telling you " Thanks for Filling out the form" double check and if you get the email you are set! Many emails filters restrict incoming emails so check your junk or spam mail. Race sign up will have strict deadlines, so make sure you sign up on time or you will not be racing that day! There are no exceptions and we would rather have you scratch or not make it than miss the oportunity to race. Make sure you know if it is skate or classic and if you are ready to race. Varsity and JV1 is determined by the head coach. Checking in with coaches ( middle school included) prior to signing up will help you know if and what race level you will be ready for.
In the days leading up to your race, check your equipment and layout your clothing. The day before your race: eat a balanced dinner and hydrate. Get plenty of sleep. Day of: eat a good breakfast and lunch! Continue to hydrate during the day. Know the early dismissal time and bus pick up information. Once at the race site. Find out where Edina Nordic will gather. Put your ski bag and gear with Edina Nordic. Make sure your name is on everything! Get your race bib if you do not have it. Put your race bib on over your race top immediately. You must race in the school provided race suit and use the race bib provided to you. Check in with coaches and know your specific start time is. The start time will be given according to a running clock time, not the actual time of day. You can even write your start time on your hand with a sharpie marker. Races can start in a number of ways from individual starts, mass starts, Double Pole Zones etc. and your coaches will inform you of the start style. We actually practice starts at our EHS practices to get you ready for race days.
Talk to others on the team and pay attention to what they are doing. Don't worry as everyone has had a "first race" and it is a learning process!
Generally the Varsity Guys race first, then the Varsity Ladies. Next the JV1 Guys/JV1 Ladies and then JV2 guys and Ladies. There is generally a brief pause between each group so knowing when to warm up, when to get warm ups off, and staying off of the race course while doing so is important.
Edina will always have designated Edina coaches who start the Edina skiers. We also will be occasionally hosting the entire meet and starting all Lake Conference Skiers at the ski meet. It is important to know that starts can be chaotic, so be patient in the very beginning of the race and work your way up past other skiers as the race thins out after the start line!
Parent and coaches will have warm up capes available for those skiers in the immediate start line and will aid you in taking it off at the correct time. At the end of the race it is your responsibility to get your race bib into the team basket after you have crossed the finish line. Parent volunteers will try to help remind you of this task. Failure to return your assigned bib can have consequences for racing in subsequent races.
Keep moving for a proper cool down and put on appropriate clothing. Cheer others on and when all skiers are done look for a post race snack. Be sure to know the rules about riding with others versus taking the bus back to EHS and remember to grab everything you brought with you to the meet.
Gopher State Timing does the conference timing and remember that errors occur so be patient as the final results can take a day. Gopher State Timing Link
Coaches will ride the bus both to and from a meet while other coaches are required to wrap up the meet so they will not be available right away to check on your time! If you feel there is an error on your race time, email us and we can forward it to the timing company when appropriate.
