Nestled in the heart of Forest Grove, Nana Cardoon is an urban homestead that offers opportunities to explore and learn about artisanal food production from soil to seed and farm to table. The site is about an acre in size and is densely packed with garden beds, a berry patch, ducks and chickens, a small orchard, and grain trial patches. The outdoor kitchen boasts an earth oven, a variety of wood-fired stoves, a bicycle-powered grain grinder, and a plethora of strange and wonderful cooking utensils collected from the world over. Because of the cozy nature of this site, class size is limited to 32 students. For younger visitors, we require a specific student/adult ratio to ensure adequate supervision in the close environs.
We offer two options for site visits:
Basic package - includes a comprehensive garden tour followed by a targeted lecture, discussion, or seminar
Season-based experiential activity - typically consisting of preparing and sharing a meal from food harvested in the garden.
Both packages include a one hour pre-visit consultation to design an experience that integrates your learning goals. Rates for each option are described below.
Basic package - Tour and Talk: $70 for 2 hours
Includes an experienced instructor and tour guide
For K-8. client will supply one (1) teacher or assistant for every 10-12 students. If you are unable to provide assistants, we can provide them at the rate of $15/hour per assistant.
Deluxe package - Experiential Activities and Meal
To ensure that students are fully engaged throughout their learning experience, they will be assigned to pods of no more than 8 students. Pods rotate through activities so that each student may experience all of the activities involved in preparing the meal. Each activity is guided by an experienced instructor with an emphasis on making connections to the academic goals you wish to address.
Basic Package charge ($70)
$25/hr for rotation instructors. We require 1 approved instructor for each pod of 8 students.
Prep and clean-up. $15/hr (2 hour minimum). To waive this charge, you may supply your own approved prep/clean-up crew.
$10/student food and materials fee
Rotation instructor training
In order to reduce costs, you may elect to supply your own rotation instructors. In this case, we will provide a 6-hr workshop to prepare up to 8 instructors for supervising learning activities.
6-hr Rotation Instructor Workshop: $150
