Digital Tools as Mind Tools to Develop 21st Century Skills: The Four C's
Weekly Overview
This week continues our two week simulation, as you work for me at my start up company TEWLS
The reading this week dives into a consideration of technology as Mindtools, avoiding the Entertainment Pitfall as we continue our exploration of the multitude of available digital tools, using the Triple E framework to identify those applications and tools that are worth using in the classroom.
What can digital tools allow students to do in the 21st century classroom? Remember our Four C’s conceptual view: Critical Thinking, Creativity, Communication, and Collaboration - does the digital tool allow students to experience each of these – independently, paired, or all together? Thinking about how you already provide for these in your classroom, consider how technology could strengthen that experience - this is the promise of digital technology. When we put technology in the hands of students, content can be collected and manipulated, new ideas shared across vast spans of time and space, and models can be created, all while they learn together in an effort to express their understandings in unique and personal ways. We can look at how students can learn by using technology by to filtering any tool you want to use through the Triple E Framework - does the technology Engage, Enhance, and Extend learning?
Learning Objectives
After the successful completion of this module, students will:
Explore web 2.0 tool opportunities in their content to provide for 21st century learning.
Apply the technology framework Triple E for analysis of digital tools for use in their classrooms.
Play with different digital tools for communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creation to Develop experiential skills.
CONTENT READINGS
The readings for this week remind us of previous frameworks as we prepare to dive into a critical analysis framework known as the Triple E. As you read, remind yourself waht framework seems to fit your planning approach to content/pedagogy and further about the purpose digital tools serve.
