The Economics Department, Presidency College offered a Ph.D. programme through the Center for Economic Studies. Ramprasad Sengupta was the first Research Scholar, who was supervised by Prof. Dipak Banerjee. Among the Research Scholars who joined the Center were Abhirup Sarkar, Anup Sinha, Soumyen Sikdar, Susmita Rakshit, Ambar Ghosh, Pranab Basu, and others. However, few finished. Most of them went on to USA to complete their Ph.D. Nevertheless, the training that they received at the Center was invaluable in their latter life.
After becoming a University, the Ph.D. programme was halted for some time. It was re-introduced again in 2019, with three students. In the first year, students have to undergo a rigorous course work of 16 credits. It comprises of a compulsory paper in Research methodology and Econometrics, followed by optional courses in Advanced Econometrics, Development Economics, Finance, etc. Applications are sought periodically through the University website. Shortlisted applicants have to appear before a Board and make a short presentation on their proposed research area; they also have to submit a short Statement of Purpose at the time of interview.

Thesis title - “Silent bruises: Essays on the determinants and consequences of violence against women in India”, Awarded her doctorate degree in science from Economics Department, Presidency University in, August, 2023. She is currently serving as a Policy Consultant at NITI Aayog, New Delhi, where she contributes to evidence-based policymaking in economics and the higher education sector.
Arpita graduated in Economics from Presidency University, Kolkata, in 2018, and post-graduated from Jadavpur University in 2020. She interned at the Reserve Bank of India, Kolkata, and qualified for the UGC-NET examination in 2020. Since 2022, she has been working as a Scientific Assistant A at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. She enrolled in the PhD programme in Economics at Presidency University in 2024 and registered her thesis titled, Essays on Economic Inequality and Poverty in India, in February 2025 under the supervision of Professor Zakir Husain (Presidency University) and Professor Diganta Mukherjee (Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata). She presented her paper Premature Mortality and Poverty in India at the Research Scholars’ Workshop organized by Jadavpur University, and also co-authored a book chapter on Evolving Nature of Women Empowerment in India with Professor Manisha Chakrabarty, published by Routledge India in 2024.

Anindita completed her Bachelor's in Economics from Lady Brabourne College, University of Calcutta in 2019, and her Master's in Economics from Presidency University in 2021. She qualified for UGC NET JRF in 2022. Currently, she's pursuing her PhD under the joint supervision of Prof. Zakir Husain and Prof. Mousumi Dutta, where her research focuses on “Climate change indicators and child health in India”. Her postgraduate dissertation, titled “Online Network Formation Among Students During COVID-19,” was published in Studies in Microeconomics in 2022 (https://doi.org/10.1177/23210222221111654). Anindita has also presented and shared her research on the impact of high temperatures on child malnutrition at conferences like the 12th Annual Conference of the Indian Health Economics and Policy Association, the 6 th Annual Conference of Economics & Finance, the INET–YSI South Asia Regional Conference and 34 th Annual Conference of Jadavpur University (2025). Indranath Chatterjee completed his graduation in Economics from Bankura Christian College in 2020 and post-graduation from Presidency University in 2022. He qualified the UGC-NET in 2023 and joined the Department of Economics at Presidency University as a Research Scholar in October 2023. Tuba Tasis is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Economics at Presidency University, Kolkata, with a research focus on the gendered dimensions of environmental issues. The title of her doctoral thesis is "Women and Climate Change", registered in the year 2025. Her research is being jointly supervised by Dr. Pravesh Tamang, Associate Professor, and Dr. Saswatee Mukherjee, Assistant Professor, both at Presidency University.
