The Revolutionary Elite Brigade to Eradicate Law Supremacy, better known throughout the galaxy as the R.E.B.E.L.S., was founded by Orion after he abandoned New Genesis and chose to wage war against tyranny on his own terms. Refusing to wait for prophecies or divine intervention, he sought allies who believed that no empire, no matter how powerful, should be allowed to decide the fate of entire civilizations. His first recruits were Supergirl, whose compassion had become a symbol of hope after the fall of Krypton, and Adam Strange, whose experience organizing resistance cells on Rann had already proven that even the strongest occupation could be challenged.

Rather than building an army capable of matching Apokolips in open warfare, the three heroes envisioned something far more dangerous: a decentralized rebellion capable of striking where Darkseid least expected. As word of their victories spread across occupied worlds, warriors, fugitives, revolutionaries, and former soldiers gradually rallied behind their cause. Among those who answered their call were Starfire, Lobo, Icon, Mr. Miracle, Mrs. Miracle, Zan, and Jayna, each bringing with them their own reasons for standing against the empire. Together, they became the galaxy's most wanted resistance movement, carrying a single conviction wherever they traveled—that no world was beyond saving.

first mission

The R.E.B.E.L.S.' first operation targeted an isolated Apokoliptian intelligence station hidden within the remains of a shattered moon. According to information recovered by Adam Strange's resistance network on Rann, the installation contained decades of military records documenting Darkseid's expansion throughout the galaxy, including invasion routes, supply lines, hidden shipyards, and the locations of worlds scheduled for future conquest. Realizing the information could save countless civilizations before they were attacked, Orion led the assault despite knowing the station was protected by some of Apokolips' deadliest commanders.
The infiltration quickly evolved into a full-scale battle after the team was discovered by Mantis, who had been assigned to oversee the facility's defenses. While Supergirl and Starfire evacuated imprisoned political dissidents held inside the station, Orion engaged Kalibak in a brutal duel that devastated entire sections of the complex. At the same time, Lobo hunted down Steppenwolf through the station's hangars, ultimately killing the legendary general after a savage battle that left the docks in ruins. Mantis attempted to escape with the intelligence archives but was intercepted by Mr. Miracle and Mrs. Miracle, whose coordinated assault allowed Adam Strange to secure the database before Mantis was eliminated. Although Kalibak escaped before Orion could defeat him, the station's destruction delivered the rebellion its first decisive victory. More importantly, the stolen records gave both the R.E.B.E.L.S. and the Galactic Alliance the ability to anticipate Darkseid's future campaigns, transforming the scattered resistance into an organized force capable of staying one step ahead of the empire.

Notable missions

The intelligence recovered during their first operation revealed that dozens of occupied planets had unknowingly become logistical hubs supplying Apokolips' endless war machine. Rather than attempting to liberate entire worlds at once, the R.E.B.E.L.S. adopted Adam Strange's strategy of dismantling the empire piece by piece. Every convoy destroyed, every fuel depot sabotaged, and every communications relay disabled forced Darkseid's fleets to slow their advance, buying precious time for vulnerable civilizations to prepare their defenses.
Their growing campaign eventually led them to Korugar, where Zan and Jayna reunited with underground resistance movements that had survived decades beneath Sinestro's authoritarian government. The twins quickly discovered that many of the rebels had abandoned hope after generations of defeat. Inspired by Icon's unwavering belief that symbols could inspire revolutions as effectively as victories, the R.E.B.E.L.S. orchestrated the liberation of an entire labor district rather than pursuing military objectives. Watching ordinary citizens openly defy the regime for the first time reminded the team that defeating empires required more than destroying armies—it required giving people something worth believing in.
Meanwhile, Starfire's search for Tamaran became increasingly personal after intercepted Apokoliptian transmissions confirmed that Komand'r had accepted Darkseid's protection in exchange for complete control over her homeworld. Refusing to launch a reckless assault, Kory instead used the rebellion's growing network to secretly extract Tamaranean prisoners, scientists, and military officers loyal to the old royal family. Each successful rescue weakened Komand'r's authority while slowly rebuilding the resistance that one day would be capable of reclaiming Tamaran without condemning its people to another devastating civil war.
As the rebellion expanded, Scott Free and Barda began leading covert missions deep inside Apokoliptian territory, rescuing children destined for Granny Goodness' Orphanage Camps before they could be indoctrinated into Darkseid's armies. Every successful extraction reminded Barda of the life she had once lived, while Scott gradually accepted that true freedom meant giving others the chance to escape the same chains he had broken years before.
The campaign reached its most desperate moment after Kalibak launched a coordinated offensive against several liberated worlds simultaneously, hoping to stretch the rebellion beyond its limits. Rather than dividing their already limited forces, Orion ordered every available member to defend a single refugee fleet carrying thousands of civilians escaping occupied space. Although numerous colonies fell during the offensive, the survival of the convoy preserved the rebellion itself. Witnessing Orion sacrifice strategic victories to save innocent lives convinced even Lobo that the R.E.B.E.L.S. represented something greater than another mercenary contract, earning the God of Rebellion the loyalty of warriors who had once fought only for themselves.
Months later, the intelligence stolen during their first mission finally revealed Darkseid's greatest hidden project: a network of dimensional gateways designed to allow Apokolips to deploy entire armadas anywhere in the known universe without warning. Rather than attempting the impossible task of destroying every gateway, the R.E.B.E.L.S. launched a coordinated campaign against the engineers, commanders, and supply chains responsible for maintaining the system. By assassinating generals, hijacking warships, and sabotaging construction sites before they became operational, the rebellion forced Darkseid's empire into a prolonged war of attrition. As the campaign came to an end, Lobo announced that his contract with the team had run its course and that he had no intention of becoming part of "another bleeding family of do-gooders." Before he could depart, however, the Main Man remained behind to cover the team's escape during an overwhelming imperial counterattack, apparently sacrificing himself against impossible odds. Believing Lobo to have finally met his end, the R.E.B.E.L.S. honored his memory before continuing the fight. Weeks later, the bounty hunter unexpectedly returned, very much alive after yet another resurrection. Grumbling that someone had to keep the "fragile heroes" from getting themselves killed if Darkseid escalated the war, Lobo reluctantly chose to remain with the R.E.B.E.L.S.—at least until things stopped getting worse.

Honorary members

As victories against Apokolips inspired resistance movements throughout the galaxy, legendary figures who preferred to remain independent occasionally fought beside the R.E.B.E.L.S. Although none accepted permanent membership, each became an invaluable ally during critical moments of the war.
Among the rebellion's greatest supporters was Vril Dox II, the legendary commander of the L.E.G.I.O.N. Having spent years leading his own interstellar guerrilla campaign, Dox frequently coordinated intelligence exchanges and joint operations with Orion's forces. His tactical brilliance repeatedly saved entire resistance cells from imperial ambushes, while his growing friendship with Supergirl slowly developed into one of the few relationships in which Kara felt truly understood by someone who also carried the burden of protecting entire civilizations.
An unexpected alliance emerged through Mongul, the powerful proprietor of the galaxy's most infamous warworld cabarets. Viewing Darkseid's endless expansion as a threat to the fragile balance that sustained his criminal empire, Mongul secretly supplied the rebellion with weapons, information, and eventually one of his most feared mercenaries: Tribulus. The warrior's overwhelming strength proved decisive during a brutal campaign through a heavily fortified sector personally monitored by Kalibak, allowing the R.E.B.E.L.S. to shatter the imperial defenses and evacuate thousands of civilians before Apokolips could retaliate.
Captain Comet became another constant presence throughout the rebellion despite repeatedly refusing Orion's invitations to join the organization permanently. Believing that justice should never belong exclusively to one faction, he chose to remain an independent protector, appearing whenever innocent lives were threatened regardless of political allegiance. His devastating psychic abilities repeatedly turned impossible battles into victories, annihilating fleets, incinerating imperial fortresses, and covering the R.E.B.E.L.S.' retreats whenever Darkseid's forces threatened to overwhelm them. Though he never considered himself one of the rebels, every member of the team regarded Captain Comet as one of their greatest allies.
Apparition's first mission with the R.E.B.E.L.S. began after Enya Wazzo experienced a series of prophetic dreams unlike any she had ever known. Rather than showing possible futures, the visions depicted entire star systems consumed by an endless darkness before a single beacon of violet light pierced through the void. Following the dreams across the galaxy, the team eventually discovered that the source was Carol Ferris, who had become trapped inside an abandoned Apokoliptian observatory while investigating strange emotional disturbances spreading across nearby civilizations. The phenomenon was being manipulated by Desaad, who sought to weaponize fear and despair to identify worlds most vulnerable to Darkseid's future conquests. Working alongside Carol and the young cosmic adventurer Galaxy, Taylor Berzalay, the R.E.B.E.L.S. dismantled the observatory before its psychic transmitter could activate. Throughout the mission, Galaxy's infectious optimism constantly challenged Wazzo's tendency to focus on catastrophic futures, while Carol taught her that hope was not found by preventing every tragedy, but by inspiring others to overcome them. Upon learning that Apokolips had dispatched the ancient executioner Devilance to capture him, Orion immediately abandoned an ongoing campaign on the edge of the galaxy and traveled to Earth to ensure Sonny's survival until the Forever People could arrive. Although Sonny possessed neither superhuman powers nor any desire to become involved in an interstellar war, his optimism, resilience, and unwavering belief in the value of ordinary life made him something Darkseid could never truly understand. Devilance relentlessly pursued them across several continents, forcing Orion, Superman, and Mr. Terrific into a desperate running battle while Sonny slowly realized why the greatest empire in existence feared a simple human being. Their journey finally ended when the Forever People reached Earth and escorted Sonny to a sanctuary beyond Darkseid's reach. Though he never officially joined the R.E.B.E.L.S., Sonny Sumo became one of the rebellion's most closely guarded allies, embodying the hope that the Human Equation could one day become the ultimate answer to the tyranny of Anti-Life.
