One formal process (or rather meta-process) that I employ is what I term transformational composition. This involves selecting a piece of existing music (of any type: I tend to select large scale, XVIII century masterpieces). This music is modified via careful selection of rules of transformation to produce a different result. I have composed a number of large-scale works using this methodology. My current, major project is a sequel to Mozart’s die Zauberflöte, using (perhaps obviously) the first opera as its generative material. Because of projects developed under my work with virtual orchestra, I happened to have input the entire opera with all its nuances into a virtual orchestra database. Since I possess the granular musical data, it is possible to manipulate this music using computational tools.
