Barton Community College: You have work due on the first Wednesday of the class.
APUS: You have work due the first Sunday of the course
Acadeum: You have work due the first Monday of the course
Every student is required to have lab materials.
General Chemistry (1 & 2)
Barton - You will be assessed a lab fee with your tuition. Barton Community College will ship you a kit of materials. There are no additional supplies to purchase (that I know of, as of today)
AMU / APUS - Your labs are virtual. There are no supplies to purchase.
Ferrum - All lab materials are located within the course. There is nothing additional for you to provide.
Organic 1: Lab kit here or from the BCC bookstore here/ (Regardless of school, it is easier for the kit manufacturer to keep it in one place.)
Organic 2: Lab kit here or from the BCC bookstore here. If you did not take Organic 1 with me, you will need to order the Organic 2 supplement as well. This is also available from the bookstore linked above. The supplement contains glassware and a UV light.
The Organic lab kits have some items that are required to complete the kit. Either they would spoil (hard boiled egg for Org 2) or they cannot be shipped (acetone, isopropyl alcohol). The required items may be simple like office supplies (scissors, tape) or you may have to purchase them (distilled water). You are expected to provide these items when the lab calls for them.
I strongly suggest you use some sort of book resource. A free, open-source text book is provided within each classroom and you can find a mirror of the material on this website.
The following textbook suggestions are OPTIONAL for those who would like to have an "old-fashioned" book. :-)
If you already have a 2 semester General Chemistry book (for the General Chemistry Series), the material is valid and will help you in our course. If you would like to purchase one, get Burdge & Overby's Chemistry: Atoms First. An old copy is just as good as a new one. The course was originally built on the 2nd edition.
If you already have a 2 semester Organic Chemistry book (for the Organic Chemistry Series), the material is valid and be a tremendous help for practicing the material. I suggest the use of Smith's Organic Chemistry , 4th edition (with the fish on the cover). I suggest a used copy of the 4th edition. You can usually pick one up for less than $30.
Each course is loaded with 6-8 modules of material.
Each module has
my written and video lectures
practice problems and videos of the problems being solved
Homework - The assigned homework is the bare minimum for understanding the topics. You may eek by with the assigned homework but you need to work on more problems than are assigned.
Discussion - Not every module has a REQUIRED discussion. Pay attention to what is in your classroom. Initial posts are due before the end of the module. Check your course calendar and read the announcement for each Module. No discussion posts are ever accepted after the module due date - regardless of reason.
Lab - Every module has a minimum of 1 lab activity. These activities were chosen to cover typical lab techniques and solidify common topics. For some schools, there is extra credit available for every lab. The extra credit is to complete the lab early. There is no additional work for extra credit.
Quiz - Every module has a quiz. The quizzes will open with the assigned module.
Final Exam - Every course has a cumulative final exam. Check your course calendar for the due date. It may be due before the course close date.
