Organic 2 Module 1 Module 2 Module 3 Module 4 Module 5 Module 6 Module 7
Most due dates for my 8 week sessions are on MONDAYS of the term. Initial discussion posts are due on THURSDAYS of the module week.
Organic Chemistry is a Diva. You have to pay attention to OChem every day. The eText is broken into "sections". For the 8 week sessions, plan to study a minimum of 2 sections per day. Some sections will go faster and some will need more attention. Work the problems. Regardless of the book you are using, work the problems. Use the homework as a practice quiz before you view the video. Go through my lesson. OR start with my lesson then go through the text. Whichever way works for you, dedicate time every day to studying Organic and working the problems.
Syllabus example
2025 - Summer 12-week session will be offered at Barton Community College
Sporadically, I also offer this course through a school associated with Acadeum.edu
Each student is required to purchase a new lab kit. You will need a working UV lamp. This is NOT a blacklight. The kit company has these for sale for about $54 as an add on to your lab kit. If you took 1814 with me, you were sent one in your lab kit.
If you did not take Organic 1 with me, you will need to purchase the Organic Lab Supplement. This contains items expected to be carried over from the Organic 1 kit.
CHEM 1816: Organic 2 - Lab kit here or from the bookstore here
You will need to purchase 91% isopropyl alcohol and acetone from a local store.
Acetone - This needs to be a colorless solution that has less than 4 ingredients. See the pictures below
YES: Ingredients: Acetone, Denatonium Benzoate.
NO: Ingredients: Acetone, Propylene Carbonate, Aqua/Water, Dimethyl Glutarate, Dimethyl Adipate, Dimethyl Succinate, Glycerin, Fragrance, Denatonium Benzoate, Gelatin, FD&C Yellow 11.
91% Isopropyl Alcohol - Your store will sell 70% and 91%. You need 91%.
Standard household items: Pencil, plastic wrap, bright light, warm water, ice water, refrigerator, you may need a protractor
Organic 2: Hard boiled egg
The course uses an eText from Libretext.org: https://chem.libretexts.org/Bookshelves/Organic_Chemistry/Map%3A_Organic_Chemistry_(Smith)
It is free and contained in the classroom for your use (or the above website).
OPTIONAL: If you already have a 2 semester Organic Chemistry book, the material is valid and be a tremendous help for practicing the material. I suggest the use of Smith's Organic Chemistry , 4th edition (with the fish on the cover). You can usually pick one up for less than $30.
To be successful in this class, work constantly and consistently.
Work the end of chapter problems. Work more problems. Ask questions.
Make a notes sheet for each Module of equations, constants, helpful things for each quiz. You may use this sheet on the quiz. Having one of these for each module makes studying for the final exam very efficient.
Due Dates are listed as Mondays for the 8 week sessions. If you mentally make your due dates earlier, you will achieve more success in this class.
BCC Only: There is extra credit every week in the form of turning in your labs early. That date is on prior to the module due date. For example, if Mod 1 is due March 25 and you turn in your completed lab by Thursday, March 21, you will be eligible for 2 extra credit points. Lab extra credit is not extended for ANY reason.
Orientation Activities - due the first Wednesday of the course
Final Exam - due the last Friday of the course
**This is before the course close date so that I can get your grades pulled together and you can bring any grading anomalies to my attention before the course closes.
