For BCC: Our only required materials for your course involves the Lab portion. Barton Community College will be supplying a kit of materials to all registered students of Barton Chemistry courses after the lab fee has been paid. Verify your address with the lab kit coordinator (lkc@bartonccc.edu). If you have missing items or questions about the kit, contact the lab kit coordinator.
For Other schools: MOST of the other courses I teach use virtual labs only and they are no cost to the students.
The course officially uses the OpenStax: Chemistry - Atoms First book. This is provided in the classroom.
OPTIONAL: If you already have a 2 semester General Chemistry book, the material is valid and will help you in our course. If you would like to purchase one, get Burdge & Overby's Chemistry: Atoms First. An old copy is just as good as a new one. The course was originally built on the 2nd edition. You may get started learning the material as soon as you are ready. The sooner you begin, the more success you will have in this course.
To be successful in this class, work constantly and consistently.
Make a notes sheet for each Module of equations, constants, helpful things for each quiz. You may use this sheet on the quiz. Having one of these for each module makes studying for the final exam more efficient.
Due Dates are listed in the classroom and are Session specific. If you mentally make your due dates earlier, you will achieve more success in this class. BCC Only: There is extra credit every week in the form of turning in your labs early. For example,
If Module 1 Quiz is due on Monday, Jan 25 and you turn in your completed lab 1 by Thursday, Jan 21 you will be eligible for 4 extra credit points. Lab extra credit is not extended for ANY reason. An incomplete lab will not receive extra credit.
Orientation Activities are due the First Wednesday of the course for all sessions.
GET READY
To be ready for Gen Chem 1, review the math concepts identified below.
I found I was making some assumptions about my students and their readiness for the Gen Chem 1 curriculum and what information they were taking with them to their next course.
Mathematical knowledge:
Order of operations (Khan Academy Link)
Work with negative numbers (add, subtract, multiply, divide) (Link to Khan Academy Section)
Solve for a variable (Link Khan Academy)
Enter and use scientific notation with your calculator (Exponent key not * 10 ^ power) (Khan Academy link to Scientific Notation: Section 1, Section 2)
Use units to describe values (meters, grams, etc) (work with units link)
Use a graphing program like Excel (or list below; Link for creating graphs; Linear equations and graphs) and create a trendline (Best Fit Line Link)
Chemistry knowledge:
Have seen a periodic table before. You don’t have to understand all of the parts, but you should know what the words “Periodic Table” mean. (www.ptable.com)
