Lesson 1 Mathematical Properties Introduction

PEDAGOGICAL METHODS

• Flipped Classroom: Students will take notes on properties as homework.
• Differentiated Instruction: Students work at their own pace on the homework. Modifications of homework will be made for students without computer nor internet at home (printed copy of PPT slides).
• Frontloading vocabulary of the Properties.

COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS

• 6.EE.A.2c: Evaluate expressions at specific values of their variables. Include expressions that arise from formulas used in real-world problems. Perform arithmetic operations, including those involving whole number exponents, in the conventional order when there are no parentheses to specify a particular order (Order of Operations).
• 6.EE.A.3: Apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions.
• 6.EE.A.4: Identify when two expressions are equivalent (i.e., when the two expressions name the same number regardless of which value is substituted into them).

SWBAT

• Students will access prior knowledge that any number plus zero is that number and any number multiplied by zero is zero.
• Students will gain knowledge of the definitions of the Identity Properties, Commutative Properties, and Associative Properties of Addition & Multiplication.
• Students recognize properties as they solve numerical and algebraic expressions.
