Student Led Conferences (SLC) "encourage students to take active ownership in communicating their learning, goals and growth rather than be a passive observer." It's also another technique for scholars to provide feedback on their education. Though more common with middle school and high school, elementary versions are available. Dingle Community PTA has heard from local and regional educators that SLCs improve academic performance.
What the Research Says
We looked at renowned education researcher John Hattie's effect size rankings to see if anything matched Student Led Conferences. In his book "Visible Learning for Teachers" the #2 ranked item (effect size 1.44) was "student self reported grades/student expectations". It looks related to Student Led Conferences, which explains why people are reporting increased academic results. Watch John Hattie's video explaining student expectations: https://vimeo.com/41465488
The following is what we found online. It was NOT the Project PROMESA provided to WJUSD.
"Project PROMESAS: A U.S. Department of Education grant for $1.2 million is the fourth installment of a five-year grant in support of 'Project PROMESAS (Pathways with Regional Outreach and Mathematics Excellence for Student Achievement in STEM).'"
"Project PROMESAS is a regional STEM initiative where mathematics faculty from a 4-year Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and 2-year HSI community colleges collaboratively address systemic change in teaching. The aim of Project PROMESAS’ SSC initiative is to transform mathematics pathways into STEM and to strengthen the STEM student success pipeline. The project emphasizes faculty development on cultural competency, inclusive pedagogy, and renewing the curriculum itself."

"Employ Research-Proven Curricula. The Uncommon NYC academic program is rooted in research-proven curricula that have been shown to dramatically accelerate progress to mastery for low-income students including those with disabilities and English-language deficits. In ELA, the school will employ Reading Mastery, a phonics-based reading program to hone decoding skills and a teacher-developed reading comprehension program. The school will use a Read Aloud model based on the Text Talk Program designed by noted vocabulary guru Isabel Beck, to build vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension abilities. In mathematics, UNYC1 will use Common-Core aligned materials created by Uncommon’s own master teachers and mathematics content experts that are based on the Investigations Math curriculum. Investigations is a curriculum that allows scholars to deep dive into mathematical conceptual understanding. Through the use of cognitively guided instruction, children will have the opportunity to explore using a variety of different strategies including base tens, pictures, and algorithms. The Investigations curriculum is designed to allow students to draw upon their own knowledge and understanding to experiment with strategies that further their mathematical conceptual understanding."
