Why
“Only measurable improvement in achievement scores is correlated with increased economic productivity and allows all of [Dingle’s] families to prosper.” – I Got Schooled, pg 17
Dingle Set High Academic Performance Targets
In the 2018-2019 school year, only 23% of Dingle scholars met or exceeded the state standard in English and 17% in math. At the end of the 2020-2021 academic year Dingle staff set a goal to increase English by +23 points (roughly 11%) and math +20 points (roughly 10%) annually for the next three years, raising school-wide academics on the California School Dashboard to blue/green within 3 years. At the same time Dingle Community PTA is aiming for “all scholars at or above grade level” (which is higher performance than the 3 year target).
Dingle Is Switching to Model ‘Exemplar Schools’ (Five Keys)
In 2020-2021 Dingle Community PTA (staff and parents/guardians) read the book “I Got Schooled” to build a shared understanding of how schools like Dingle in the U.S.A. have increased academic performance school-wide. The switch to becoming an exemplar (model) school requires doing well in all Five Keys. We would like to see Dingle focus on the “Five Keys” to improve academic achievement.
What are "School Compacts"?
The "C.E. Dingle Elementary School Compact" is a summary of roles and responsibilities between staff, scholars, and families/parents/guardians as it relates to scholars' success at Dingle, including academics and social-emotional wellbeing.
Project Goals
Discover how exemplar schools define roles and responsibilities among these groups
Examine exemplar pacts, including compare/contrast to Dingle's
Explore WJUSD's role and responsibilities in discovering exemplar schools' model pacts
Make recommendations to Dingle's School Site Council to improve Dingle's compact to be an exemplar (if needed)
The 2020-2021 "C.E. Dingle Elementary School Compact" will be reviewed at the upcoming Dingle School Site Council (SSC) meeting on November 8, 2021.
SSC members have not yet discussed staff-scholar-family roles and responsibilities at exemplar (model) schools.
Dingle Community PTA is currently piloting its first Parent Culture "book club" (training/orientation) that addresses many of the compact's topics.
We don't have the WJUSD contacts yet that are involved in/responsible for school compacts.
Finding Exemplars:
We could not find many compact examples by Uncommon Schools (they use handbooks and/or their compacts are not public).
There are compact examples by other exemplar schools, such as KIPP. They also sometimes have the compacts/contracts in handbooks.
Some of the exemplar compacts/contracts include items related specifically to school-staff contracts that may not be applicable to Dingle staff.
Assessment of Dingle's from Beja (to be replaced with an assessment by others that complete the Parent Culture training):
Dingle's compact is pretty good, it could just use additional clarity/specificity. For example, KIPP specifies when teachers arrive and leave school as well as when they're available to answer family inquiries. The same rules might not apply and might be too limiting, but specificity in key areas would be helpful.
Dingle's does not mention methods of accountability. For comparison, Uncommon Schools specifically mentions parents signing the homework logs. Parents at Dingle also sign homework logs, but it's not in the compact. If Dingle (staff and families) later agree to a parent-friendly school-wide assessment of how Dingle delivers its "Five Keys", adding staff participation in the assessment would be a great addition to the Dingle compact. Add parent participation to Dingle assessments, too, like Healthy Kids.
Dingle's does not mention signing scholars up for ASES. For comparison, KIPP specifically mentions scholars arrive at 7:15am and stay until 5pm.
No compacts mention a district's role. That should be added. Uncommon Schools mentions throughout their training that their district-equivalent staff are to provide "Uncommon Support" to create systems that replicate and support master teaching and excellent school culture.
3.5 hours spent by parents on this project as of 11/7/2021.
The compact is found in the handbook, though this link is to the 2019-2020 version and the version below is updated.

Family Partnership
Uncommon Schools is a community of students, families/guardians, teachers, staff, and school leaders. We believe in the importance of working together to make a positive impact on the academic and social-emotional growth of every child. Although the job of making decisions about school policy belongs to the Board of Trustees and the School Leader, family involvement is absolutely critical to the success of our students and the school. We appreciate our families’ active involvement in the education of their child.
Uncommon Schools families/guardians are asked to:
Provide a quiet space for your child to study.
Partner with your child’s teacher in support of student growth, achievement, and character development.
Support other Uncommon Schools families.
Supporting Homework Success
In order to support, families/guardians can:
Provide a time and quiet place for study.
Help the student develop responsibility for completing the assignments.
Talk to their child about what they learned at school and encourage their child to develop a positive attitude about learning.
In Elementary school, read to or with their child every night for at least 20 minutes
Check your younger child’s assignment pad to make sure they did all of their assignments or discuss assignment completion with older students
Review assignments for neatness and accuracy
Contact your child’s teacher if you feel that your child is having a homework problem
Help your child get started by asking questions (examples included in handbook)
Commitment to Excellence
The Commitment to Excellence is the foundation of a KIPP school. It represents the contract that all faculty, students, and parents sign upon starting their work with KIPP. The contract lays out the expectations the school has for teachers, for parents, and for our students. A signed copy of this document should be in place for every student and parent that has enrolled at KIPP. This process in completed during the home visit.
Some version of this contract has been in place at all KIPP schools since KIPP was opened in 1994. The contract itself does not ensure that all members of our team and family embody each of these characteristics on a day to day basis. However, the contract serves as a reminder of what we are obligated to uphold as members of the KIPP team and family. In addition, it provides us with information on what we are committing to inspire our students and families to uphold each day.
For example, if a student is not completing his or her lifework or is not treating their teammates with respect, then it is our job to teach them a new and better way. In that same way, if a parent is not checking his or her child’s lifework, then it is our obligation to have a conversation with that parent to get him or her invested in holding the child accountable. The following pages contain copies of the Commitment to Excellence for staff, scholars, and parents.
