About The Project
Aim to reconnect with today’s needs, stories, metabolisms, symbolism and the people of the 21st century, starting from the styles of the 16th-17th century Classical Ottoman Period tile art, which is known to belong to Istanbul, one of the most characteristic periods of tile. In this context, we have realized installations made of tiles that can respond to new potentials based on today’s technological possibilities and human interaction, which are a production of our geography and suitable for indoor/outdoor application. When the QR Codes in our installations are read, to deal with the conflict between the comfort of tradition and the potential of the future, the conflict between accepting and rejecting the conditions brought by time for centuries. It is the Private Garden of the Palace and 16.-17. By examining the social events that took place in Gulhane Park, which inspired the tiles of the 16.-17. century, to emphasize that we have to break traditional norms and change and develop by remembering the past in order to keep up with the times through a tile panel; just like in the process that the tiles must go through. These tiles, which we see the journey from classical to modern, adorned and pixelated with virtual networks/ties shaped by the needs of the 21st century, are also gifs of the modernization steps that Gulhane Park has hosted since the Tanzimat Ferman and the “No” moments opposed to change on the page directed by the QR code it created, or accompanied by music will be presented to the site visitor.
Why Traditional Turkish Tile(Cini)?
Known as an art, craft, and building material unique to Turkey’s geography for centuries, cini is now stuck between certain patterns and repetitions. When cini applications are used as a tile form, it can maintain its durability in indoor and outdoor applications. In addition, it is suitable for application in the public area as it is fixed in the area where it is mounted and cannot be dismantled. This project aims to bring innovations that can continue its development on discovering the potentials of a traditional art form belonging to our geography, open to human interaction, supporting today’s technologies, and being a new means of expression, accompanied by today’s potential and needs. While Çini creates the traditional step of this theme, the QR code formed by pixelation represents the next step.
