All students who intend to drive Yale Vehicles are required to take Safe Driver Training before driving the company management van or production van. Additional, separate training is required to drive the stake bed truck. Students without a valid driver's license are not permitted to drive university vehicles. See the Vehicle Use policy for further information.
All students are required to take Alcohol Awareness training at the start of their first year of school; the training must be completed before taking workstudy jobs, such as ushering and concessions work.
Before using the laser cutters, students, staff and faculty are required to complete Yale Environmental Health and Safety's Embedded Laser Safety Program online. Click here to access the training. It takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. This online portion is to be followed by a hands on training on the specific machine being used.
See more below in "Laser Cutter" section.
All Sound Design students are required to be certified in First Aid, CPR and AED. This training happens during Orientation at the start of the fall semester each year. MFA students will be certified in their first year.
*This training is only required of Sound Design students. Other design students may opt into the training if they would like.
Each year, three Design students are assigned workstudy to help maintain the spray booths. They are trained by the Assistant Director of Theatre Safety in how to safely use, clean and maintain the spray booths. This involves routine cleans and filter changes as needed. It is everyone's responsibility to maintain the booth and clean up after their own projects. Please put away your materials and throw trash into the bin, as the equipment is shared by many.
Charles Meier, 205 Park Street
Patti Panyakaew, 149 York Street
Rea Brown, Costume Shop
If you have questions or concerns about the spray booths, please direct them to the appropriate supervisor based on location. They will work alongside the Safety Office to resolve any issues!
Spray cans must be stored in the flammables cabinet when they are not actively in use. If workstudy students or other production staff find cans left out, they will be placed in the flammables cabinet - we recommend writing your name on your cans in the event they are moved!
Disposing of Spray Paint Cans:
Completely empty cans can be disposed of in the regular waste trash bins located inside or near the spray booth rooms. They do not need to be disposed of in the hazardous waste bin.
When a spray can is broken, or is ready to be disposed of and still has paint in it, it must be placed in the hazardous waste bin. Environmental Health and Safety will dispose of the paint properly so as to protect our environment!
If you notice the hazardous waste bin is full, let the spray booth supervisor workstudy student know - they will connect with EHS about taking away the waste and bringing a new can over.
Design students are trained in how to use the spray booth properly during Orientation as they enter their first year of school at DGSD. Additionally, instructions on how to use the spray booth, clean the spray booth and change its filters, as well as contact information for the spray booth supervisors are posted on the side of the booth, or the on the wall in the spray booth room.
PPE is required when spraying items in the spray booth. Safety glasses, disposable mask and gloves must be worn. This PPE is available inside the spray booth rooms. If you find that PPE has run out, let the Safety Office know and we can restock these items as needed.
Spray paint can cause serious eye damage and irritation, respiratory irritation, and cause damage to your organs through prolonged exposure. It is important for your long term health that you wear PPE while spraying.
See instructions for operating the spray booths below:
There are two laser cutters available for use for designers, they are:
The Epilog, located in the Paint Shop in 149 York Street
The Glowforge, located on the first floor of the Design Annex, 205 Park Street
Hands on training is managed by Kate Baker (Senior Administrator for Design).
Workstudy student assigned to this laser:
Pat Blanchard
Ru-Jun Wang schedules and arranges for the training of design students on the use of the Epilog laser cutter in the fall semester during Life Drawing Class. TD&P students who wish to access the laser cutter for their projects should complete the online training, and connect with Jen McClure about hands on training on the Epilog.
Workstudy students assigned to this laser:
B Entsminger and Jessie Baldinger
Kate Baker schedules and arranges for the training of design students on use of the Glowforge laser cutter in the fall semester. 1st Year Design students are not allowed to use the Glowforge until in person and online training is completed, and are not allowed to use the laser cutter for model building until their second semester.
Students can access 3D printing through the Center for Engineering, Innovation, and Design (CEID), where self-service filament printing is available 24/7. Resin printing projects can be submitted to the staff there for printing. Students must become a member and receive an orientation of the spaces before gaining card swipe access to the center.
The CEID is also available for faculty and staff use.
