When to Evacuate a DGSD/YRT Building
When to Evacuate a DGSD/YRT Building
- The sounding of the fire alarm in any DGSD building must result in the immediate evacuation of the building. When the fire alarm sounds, a loud repeating tone will occur, as well as flashing strobe lights. Always assume the alarm is a real alarm and leave the building. It is never safe to stay inside a building where the fire alarm is activated.
- The alarm system also operates as a communication system, in which emergency messages may be shared with the occupants of the building, such as shelter-in-place notices or evacuation notices. If a message comes through the alarm system to evacuate, everyone must evacuate and proceed to the assembly location. See assembly locations for our venues below.
- If a Yale Alert is sent to the community specifying the need to evacuate School of Drama buildings, or the School of Art, everyone must evacuate the building they are occupying.
- You cannot re-enter the building until the all-clear has been given from all appropriate emergency services.

At the start of the first day of tech for each production at DGSD/YRT, a fire drill will be performed with all members of the company, so they are aware of their exits, evacuation paths, and assembly points should there be an emergency evacuation during tech rehearsals or performances.

Fire Pull Stations are the means in which to activate the fire alarm. They are located in exit pathways and near exterior doors, so you may pull them as you evacuate the building. Instructions on how to activate them are printed on the front of the fire pull station.

In the event of a tornado or other sudden severe weather events when safe evacuation is not possible, an environmental release of chemical/biological/radiological contaminants occurs, or threat of violence is determined, you may be advised to shelter-in-place. A notice to shelter-in-place will be sent to you through the Yale Alert system. Follow instructions provided by Yale Alert.

- Stop classes, work, and business operations.
- If there are students, customers, clients, or visitors in the building, provide for their safety by asking them to go to the shelter-in-place location, rather than exiting the building. When authorities call for the shelter-in-place, they want everyone impacted to follow their instructions immediately where they are, and not to drive or walk outdoors.
- Unless there is an imminent threat, ask everyone to call their emergency contacts, to let them know where they are and that they are safe.
- Close and lock all windows, exterior doors, and any other openings to the outside.
- If there are coverings for the windows (curtains, blinds, etc) close them so as to protect from shattering glass due to weather or explosion.
- Bring everyone into the shelter-in-place location and lock the door, if possible.
- In the event of a threat of violence, such as a mass shooter, and leaving the building is not an option, it is best to hide in a locked room without windows, turn out the lights, barricade the door if possible, and remain silent. Turn phones and noise making devices to silent.
- Wait in the shelter-in-place location until authorities give the “all clear” or you are told to instead evacuate the building. The University and local officials may call for evacuation in specific areas that are at greatest risk in our community.
