If you or someone you are working with are hurt, or there is an accident while you are at the David Geffen School of Drama and Yale Repertory Theatre, follow the information and procedures below.
An injury is when someone is physically hurt while working, in rehearsal, in performance, or moving about campus. Examples would include hitting your head on something, cutting open your hand, spraining your ankle, etc. They can range from being very minor, like paper cuts, to very serious like broken bones.
A medical emergency is when someone is experiencing a condition that adversely affects their health, but may not be a result of a specific injury. This would include anaphylactic shock, cardiac arrest, stroke, seizure, etc.
o If you are unsure if you should call 911, CALL 911.
o Procure the AED and provide first aid and CPR as needed until emergency services arrive.
o Share with emergency services as much information as you can upon their arrival.
o If the person is aware and conscious, ask if they would like first aid assistance. If the person is unconscious, call 911.
o If they say yes, provide first aid.
o Recommend they follow up with Yale Acute Care, and offer to help them get there if needed, walking with them if they are able, or getting them an escort over to 55 Lock Street.
o The rehearsal or performance should be stopped by the Stage Manager to attend to performers and crew should they be injured or experience a medical emergency while performing or working backstage.
o The House Manager, ushers and Customer Service Safety Officers (CSSO) attend to injuries and emergencies with patrons; if they can remove a patron from a performance to treat them, then the show does not need to be stopped. If a patron must receive emergency medical care in the house, the show should be stopped, and the house lights should be brought up for visibility.
• Wash the affected area well with soap and water for 15 minutes.
• Flush your eyes, nose, or mouth in the eye wash station for 15 minutes.
• Call Yale Health Acute Care at 203-432-0123 and let them know of the incident, and seek medical evaluation immediately (within 1-2 hours).
Naloxone (name brand Narcan) is a life-saving medication that reverses the effects of opioid overdose, including heroin, fentanyl and prescription opioid medications when used in a timely fashion.
If you suspect someone is experiencing an overdose, call 911 and grab the Naloxone kit. Naloxone is a nasal spray medication, administered into the nose. All certified first-aiders at DGSD are trained in administering Naloxone, but in an emergency, it is very simple to administer. Watch the video below to learn how to administer Naloxone.
Naloxone will not harm someone who is perhaps experiencing an overdose from a drug that is not an opioid (such as alcohol) so it is always better to administer it than not if overdose is suspected.
We have a Naloxone location in most buildings currently, with plans to add more in the future. Naloxone kits are available next to our current first aid kits, hung by command hooks either on the outside of the kit or on the wall next to it. You can now find Naloxone at the following locations:
