L'Atelier Svart Studio Chair

With the successful launch of the first edition, my vision for the next-generation L'Atelier is to create something much bolder and more striking.

Make what you do, but only better. A philosophy I live by. Exploring new ways in the craft, materials and embracing the art of making mistakes in furniture making. A second edition chair with more design unfollowing today's trends. Focussed on less by stripping away the unnecessary. L'Atelier. A studio chair designed for creators.

I want to evolve L'Atelier by making its architectural silhouette sharper, more dramatic, and undeniably premium.

Frame: The Concept: Instead of using uniform $50 \times 25\text{ mm}$ square steel tubing for the entire base, we introduce tapered profiles. The legs can start wide where they meet the seat chassis to show structural strength, and subtly taper down to a finer, narrower footprint where they touch the floor.The Shift: This alters the geometric silhouette from a rigid industrial stance to something akin to mid-century Italian architecture (think Gio Ponti or Franco Albini). It instantly makes the frame look faster, sleeker, and incredibly sophisticated.

The seat: The Concept: Extend the seat depth backward while dropping the rear leg height slightly to create a more aggressive, low-slung, dynamic pitch. To lean into your signature asymmetrical and abstract forms, we can let the custom steel side-rails extend continuously past the backrest support, mimicking a sleek, structural cantilever. The Shift: A lower, deeper chassis completely transforms the presence of the chair in a room. It stops looking like an occasional chair and becomes a commanding, grounded anchor piece for a luxury studio space—inviting a deeper, more relaxed posture.

The new version is taking shape on the workbench with some serious upgrades: 

• Bolder frame: Moving to wider steel sections for the outer frame.

• Enhanced comfort: A deeper seat and extended proportions.

• The focal point: A completely unique split backrest design.

For the palette, I’m combining blacks and greys in mixed textures of pleather and fabric. I’ve also been experimenting with the steel finish mixing white into black steel paint to hit a custom, off-black gunmetal colour.
