meaning "the square" is simple, chic and directly references the square shapes in this design.

Inspiration from the town Paarl, where elegance, style and deep history is founded in a Fabric store called Demtex. 

With its rich history and heritage in the Cape, taking me towards my first Hertex fabric. Quality, elegance and luxury is what this brand represents. 

For this design something unique with its trendy angled backrest, positioned on only one side to provide an asymmetrical shape. 

Finding the perfect combination of steel thickness to not overshadow the fabric, but provide a sturdy foundation for its frame. 

Traditional upright frame design for the backrest with a slightly angled upholster, elevates the “square”  theme of this design. Hammered bronze was selected for the steel that complements the fabric.

Taking on a two tone design is a concept I have been drawn towards for some time and found this piece to be the ideal opportunity to display this change in not just fabric colours but also textures. 

A combination of light browns to elevate your living space into a natural flair of style, luxury and comfort.

A modern, custom-made occasional chair which features an industrial design style, blending asymmetrical shapes with minimalism

Frame design

The frame is constructed from thin, sleek metal, giving the chair a lightweight yet sturdy appearance with a floating effect hiding the rear feet. Metal finished in patena which is a raw metal finish, with a matt black option also available on request.

Upholstery design

The seat is a rectangle in shape, firm spring supported with a boxed side fabric design. The backrest is designed in a softer foam with a slight curved shape, including a 5 degree recline. A thin yet visible top stich to each side complements the minimalistic appearance of this chair.

Wood design

The chair boasts a unique armrest with a thin / dark wood inlay, which contrasts beautifully with the metal frame.The wood adds a touch of warmth and organic texture to the overall design, creating a harmonious balance between materials.

Fabric

The fabric is named ISBAY (stok 739), which is textured with a grey/stone appearance complementing the industrial style of this chair.

The structure is abstract, with fluid, asymmetric lines. 

Each curve is carefully calculated to flow upwards giving the lamp a sense of motion despite its stillness.

Steel is hand painted in hammered bronze, catching the golden glow of the filament bulb. 

Standing tall at 2 meters on a raw edged Spanish Oak wood inlay breaks the lines and provides a hint of nature with its natural light colour.

This design is minimal, yet its form speaks boldly by blurring the line between a functional object and modern art.

This set has been a particularly challenging but also exciting learning process from idea conception, design and construction. Balancing 3 design elements in an abstract luxury item, asymmetrical features and a truly industrial look and feel

Abstract features includes dimensions that don’t add up, fabric cuts into the lamp, shapes that don’t meet the norm, and the use of various materials integrated into the design.

Asymmetrical features includes configuration options for various display and practical applications, one sided arm rest and a lamp design fully integrated into rectangle shapes throughout every item.

Industrial features includes oversized, square and boxed steel works finished in matt black, firm upholstery with a rough and coarse fabric selection, and  industrial wood utilized in support of the theme.

The name “Verdante Cansis” speaks to a combination of elements used in this modular set that includes a chair, sofa, ottoman, additional table with a lamp fully integrated into the design “grounded in green”
