L'Atelier, the Studio Chair
L'Atelier is a chair designed for artists, creators, and anyone who enjoys having a comfortable place to sit, think, and create.
Named after the French word for a workshop, this design reflects the journey that took place in my own workshop. What started as a simple idea to create a chair in its most basic form, with function as the main focus, soon turned into months of redesign, adjustments, and experimentation. Even once the frame reached the workbench, the design continued to evolve.
One lesson I learned through this project is that creating less often requires more thought. Using less steel, less wood, less foam, and less fabric sounds simple, but creating a chair that still feels luxurious, comfortable, wide, and stylish is not easy. Every detail had to earn its place.
The custom steel frame was designed to be strong and clean, while the upholstery was carefully built up with multiple layers of support and foam to create lasting comfort. The result is a chair that feels simple at first glance, but carries a lot of thought and craftsmanship behind it.
I designed L'Atelier to be an everyday chair. A place to rest, think, sketch, read, and let creativity flow. A chair designed by an artist, for the artist.
Every new piece is an opportunity to explore the craft differently. To question materials. To challenge assumptions. To embrace the mistakes that often lead to the most meaningful discoveries.
Introducing the second edition of L'Atelier. A studio chair designed for creators. Created with a deliberate focus on less, L'Atelier strips away the unnecessary and leaves only what matters: proportion, comfort, materiality, and detail.
Built around a handcrafted steel frame using a combination of rectangular and square sections, the chair features an integrated inner and outer rail system that supports a deeply upholstered seat and backrest while maintaining a clean architectural silhouette.
The seating experience is firm yet luxurious. Deep sprung support provides exceptional comfort while preserving the chair's form and structure over time. The upholstery combines rich black vegan leather with soft slate Hertex fabric, creating a unique visual contrast that celebrates texture and craftsmanship.
A defining feature of L'Atelier is its completely split backrest. Each section differs subtly in proportion and detail, reinforcing the philosophy that bespoke design should never be perfectly repeated.
Steel finished in a dark grey, near-black industrial finish that grounds the piece, while a designer bolster cushion provides additional comfort and arm support.
