Link to PLM Goal: To equip teachers with the knowledge and resources needed to properly deconstruct curriculum standards.

What the Research Says

Moore and Lewis (n.d.) defined deconstructing a standard as the process of putting a standard into smaller and more specific learning targets. If you recall, the Prior Knowledge and Challenge sections focused on the major parts of deconstructing a standard. Teachers must move away from the idea of covering the standards just to stay in line with the district's pacing guide. While pacing is important, diving deeper into the standards has the potential to positively impact student learning. Keep in mind, not all standards need to be deconstructed. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools (2017) identified the need for deconstruction when learning targets are unclear and when teachers are aligning standards with student assignments.
