Decolonizing Education does not mean doing away with all current Western Educational Pedagogies for good. It means disrupting, dismantling and rebuilding - together. This ensures that all cultural values and pedagogies are included in order to create education systems that:
is safe and inclusive
in which all races, cultures, ethnicities, belief systems, genders and identities are valued and seen as a source of strength
teach critical and creative thinking skills crucial to reject racist viewpoints and to question dominant narratives
incorporate FNMI histories, perspectives, cultures, issues, beliefs, experiences, etc. into teaching
to strengthen cultural self-esteem and identity
To help learners come to recognize and know the structures of colonization and their implications;
To engage in activities that disrupt those structures on an individual and collective level;
To validate and re-centre of Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing;
To facilitate engagement with possibilities for making change in the world;
To respond to the Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action;
To create safe, inclusive, intercultural, accepting, pluralistic spaces for ALL students and community members;
Because it is particularly in the interests of supporting Indigenous self-determination, and has deep implications for settler societies
