Does your school / learning space have photos of any Prime Ministers or other leaders? If so, consider their relationships with FNMI peoples. Was it a positive one?
Does your school / learning space have photos of any First Nations, Métis, Inuit, Black, female or other minority groups leaders? If so, where are they placed? Are they in equally prominent positions to non-minority leaders?
Do you have a flag? Which one is it? Can others be added?
Is there a land acknowledgment displayed / announced at school?
In what languages are the signs in your school?
In what languages are the books in the library?
What is the physical organization of the classroom? Does it support community-building and inclusion?
Consider the signs and posters in your classroom. Do they inspire critical thinking, the sharing of multiple perspectives, histories and truths? Do they encourage students to question dominant narratives?
Consider other signs that are taken for granted (like those indicating who is welcome to use a particular space - like toilets). Are they prohibitive to some?
Are there spaces for students to share about their cultures and experiences?
What celebrations / religions are given more time and space?
Which celebrations / belief systems / faith groups / epistemologies are excluded?
