Block B Classes for incoming Pre-K and Kindergarten students

AB01 Mini Camp (incoming Pre-K)

Need a Pre-K program that balances school readiness and fun? Look no further. This two-hour session is for children ages 4-5 who are entering Pre-K or Kindergarten. Kids learn foundational skills necessary for early academic success, all while getting the social interaction needed to develop social and play skills. This A/B session will have a math and science focus. Each day includes time in the gym for physical activity, as well as routines and activities that will get children ready for a school setting. Students must sign up for both classes A01/B01 and attend from 8:30-10:25.

B02 Hip Hoppin’ Health (incoming K)

Get your heart pumping with a variety of physical activities as well as tips on how to be healthy!  Students will access the gym and outdoor spaces as they participate in games and physical challenges. Children in this class will be quite active, so they will need a water bottle each day.

B03 First Grade Readiness (incoming 1st)

This class reviews academic skills to better prepare students for first grade. Through class activities, partner games and independent work, students will participate in activities to reinforce the literacy and math concepts they learned in kindergarten.

B04 Second Grade Readiness (incoming 2nd)

This class reviews academic skills to better prepare students for second grade. Through class activities, partner games and independent work, students will participate in activities to reinforce the literacy and math concepts they learned in first grade.

B05 Junior Scientists (incoming 1st-2nd)

Hands-on science, here we come! In this engaging course, young scientists will experiment and explore their way through a variety of science topics. Whether they’re building structures or developing the latest formula, students will learn foundational science ideas through fun. Let the discoveries begin!


Social Studies Focused

B06 My Neighborhood, My World (incoming 1st-2nd)

This course allows students to learn about their neighborhood and community. Topics such as knowing your address, learning about special community members, and how to be an asset to your community will be covered. 


Art/Music/Theater Focused

B07 Play with Clay (incoming 1st-2nd) *New!

Students will experience tactile learning through clay. Ceramic handbuilding techniques include pinching, coiling, slab rolling, stamping and more!   Our work will include both decorative and functional kiln-fired pieces. *There is an additional $10 supplies and materials fee.



Movement Focused

B08 Open Gym (incoming 1st-2nd)

Do you enjoy sports of all kinds? Open gym gives students the opportunity to choose fun games and other P.E. activities. Whether it’s team sports, relay races, or fitness activities, there are lots of ways to enjoy physical play with classmates. Let the games begin!

Block B Classes for incoming 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students

Academic Focused

B09 Third Grade Readiness (3)

This class reviews academic skills to better prepare students for third grade. Through class activities, partner games and independent work, students will participate in activities to reinforce the literacy and math concepts they learned in second grade.

B14 Science Explorations  (3-5)

Move over, Einstein! Students in Science Exploration will have hands-on opportunities to explore basic concepts of physics and environmental science. Kids will conduct experiments to learn about electricity, magnetism, water pressure and air, and will also develop knowledge about environmental issues.

B13 ESY Math/ELA  (3-5)

This math and English language arts class is for 3rd  through 5th grade students who qualify for Extended School Year programming. This class is only for current District 30 students who currently are served by an IEP.  Enrollment is by invitation only. Please contact your child's case manager for more details. You will need an access code prior to registration.

B17 Bluestem Book Club (3-4)

The Bluestems are a readers’ choice award for middle-grade novels in Illinois. In this course, students will read their way through a variety of Bluestem Award nominees, discussing and sharing their passion for reading great books. Do not miss this chance to experience some of the best in youth literature!

B10 Fun on the Field (3-4)

Students will enjoy activities, adventures, teamwork, and fitness as they take advantage of the beautiful sun and fun in the outdoor athletic fields at Maple. Walking, running, playing, and jumping will just be the beginning of the activities we have in store for them! Sports such as soccer, football, softball, rugby, capture the flag, ultimate frisbee, and disc golf may be enjoyed during this class.


Art/Music/Theater Focused

B11 Paper Art (3-5) *

Paper’s not just for drawing! In this exploration of paper sculpture, students will sculpt paper into shapes, figures and buildings and more. Students will make folded and moving sculptures. A variety of paper products will be used like construction paper, cardstock, cardboard, foam board and vellum. Students will fold, cut, glue and sculpt their way through the class. *There is an additional $10 supplies and materials fee.

B16 Let’s Learn Guitar (4-8)

In this class, students will be learning the basic skills of playing the guitar. Students will work on beginner music theory, finger mechanics, rhythm, melody, chords and building their ears to excel in music, all while learning some of their favorite tunes! No experience required!


Fun Focused

B12 Tabletop Games (3-5) 

We’re taking it back to the basics with a variety of games that can be played right on your table! Students will use strategies, communication and problem solving skills to play different games in small groups. Expect fun, friendship, and teamwork!

Movement Focused

B18 Net & Ball Sports (7-8)

Do you love team and individual sports like pickleball, badminton, or volleyball? This course will offer a variety of experiences with physical activities including drills, scrimmages, and game play. All skill levels are welcome!

B19 Running Club (5-8)

On your marks, get set, go! This running clinic is geared towards runners of all levels of experience. Students will work on physical conditioning, as well as running form, speed, and stamina. Activities include warm-ups and stretches, drills, and runs of varying times and distances.

B25 Basketball (5-6)

It's time for tip-off! In this basketball clinic, students will work on the fundamentals of dribbling, passing, shooting, and basketball game sense. This course will offer a variety of experiences including physical conditioning, drills, and scrimmages. All skill levels are welcome!


Social Studies Focused

AB21 Service Learning (6-8)

Pay it forward! This two-block course is designed and implemented by students who want to get involved in their community. Students research different charities in the area, set up fundraising events at Maple, and if current health and safety regulations allow, we travel to different organizations, such as the local food pantry, animal shelters, or assisted-living homes. 


Academic Focused

B22 Science Challenges (6-8)

Students will engage in a variety of STEM-based design and construction challenges. This hands-on class will allow students to work individually and collaboratively through the engineering design process to create a product to meet the challenge's criteria and constraints. Students will have fun testing and evaluating their designs while also competing against the peers. This class will hone student's creativity, perseverance and engineering skills.

B23 Writing Workshop (6-8) 

Are you an aspiring poet? A would-be novelist, or a potential essayist? Are you an eager or passionate writer? This class, focused on developing our craft through writing community, is for you! Participants in this course will engage in deep and meaningful opportunities to create and refine written pieces. 

B24 Math Competition (6-8)

Students will work with one of Maple's Math Team coaches to improve their problem-solving skills. They will join the AOPS.com community, and be given daily time to work through the Art Of Problem Solving personalized and guided pathways. Students will also be given the opportunity to practice the important skill of working together as a team. Math competitions consist of both individual and team components. All mathematicians are welcome to join us!

B26 Harry Potter (6-8)

Now that you have read the books written by J.K. Rowling; it’s time for you to head off to Hogwarts’ District 30 campus! The Sorting Hat will sort you into a house and the weeks will be filled with activities that every Potter fan will love! We will make crafts, play games, test our trivia knowledge, compete in challenges and scavenger hunts, and more! Register now to ensure an owl delivers your acceptance letter!

B20 Bullet Journaling (6-8)

Bullet Journaling, often called BuJo, is a handwritten day planner, diary, and written meditation. It encourages students to coordinate their lives into a system that makes sense to them, allowing students to be more productive and reach their personal and academic goals. Students can create their own sections in order to log their daily to-do’s, long-term goals, notes, and weekly/monthly calendars.  Students will customize and categorize tasks with the use of symbols and short-form sentences, while expressing their interests creatively and developing their executive functioning skills. Materials will be provided.

B27 Summer Band (6)

This course is open to any incoming 6th grade student playing a band instrument with at least one year playing experience. We will learn and perform music in a variety of styles. Let's have some fun making music this summer!
