Block A Classes for incoming Pre-K and Kindergarten students

AB01 Mini Camp (incoming Pre-K)

Need a Pre-K program that balances school readiness and fun? Look no further. This two-hour session is for children ages 4-5 who are entering Pre-K or Kindergarten. Kids learn foundational skills necessary for early academic success, all while getting the social interaction needed to develop social and play skills. This A/B session will have a focus on math and science. Each day includes time in the gym for physical activity, as well as routines and activities that will get children ready for a school setting. Students must sign up for both A and B blocks, and attend from 8:30-10:25.

A02 Kindergarten Readiness (incoming Kindergarteners)

Prepare your little ones for kindergarten with our engaging Kindergarten Readiness Class! This class focuses on building early literacy, numeracy, social, and motor skills in a fun and supportive environment. Through interactive play, hands-on activities, and age-appropriate exercises, we'll develop foundational skills needed for a successful transition to kindergarten.

Academic Focused

A03 First Grade Readiness (incoming 1st)

This class reviews academic skills to better prepare students for first grade. Through class activities, partner games and independent work, students will participate in activities to reinforce the literacy and math concepts they learned in kindergarten.

A04 Second Grade Readiness (incoming 2nd)

This class reviews academic skills to better prepare students for second grade. Through class activities, partner games and independent work, students will participate in activities to reinforce the literacy and math concepts they learned in first grade.

A05 Junior Scientists (incoming 1st-2nd)

Hands-on science, here we come! In this engaging course, young scientists will experiment and explore their way through a variety of science topics. Whether they’re building structures or developing the latest formula, students will learn foundational science ideas through fun. Let the discoveries begin!

A09 ESY Math/ELA, (incoming K-2nd)

This mathematics and English language arts class is for Kindergarten through second grade students who qualify for Extended School Year Programming. This class is only for current District 30 students who are currently served by an IEP. Enrollment is by invitation only. Please contact your child's case manager for more details, as you will need an access code prior to registration.


Movement Focused

A06 Leaps ‘n Beats (incoming 1st-2nd)

Get your heart pumping with an exciting dance class combining jazz and hip-hop as well as tips on how to be healthy!  Students will learn choreographed dances, too!! This is an active class, so participants should wear shoes and clothes appropriate for physical activity.


Art/Music/Theater Focused

A07 Play with Clay (incoming 1st-2nd)*New!

Students will experience tactile learning through clay. Ceramic handbuilding techniques include pinching, coiling, slab rolling, stamping and more!   Our work will include both decorative and functional kiln-fired pieces. *There is an additional $10 supplies and materials fee.

A08 Children’s Theater (incoming 1st-2nd)

Students will participate in creative and traditional dramatic activities including improvisation, pantomime, and skits. This is a course designed to free children's inhibitions!  Group plays, choral readings, and solo work will be utilized. There will be a culminating production where family and friends are invited to enjoy the show.

A11 Future Mathletes (3-5) *New!

Are you ready for a thrilling mathematical journey? Join us this summer for an exciting exploration of problem-solving in mathematics! This course is tailored for students of all math levels who want to enhance their problem-solving skills while fostering a love for mathematics. Led by an experienced math competition team coach, students will engage in a series of interactive sessions designed to challenge and inspire. Through a variety of fun and engaging activities, participants will learn valuable problem-solving strategies and techniques that they can apply to a wide range of mathematical problems. Whether you're a budding mathematician looking to sharpen your skills or someone who simply enjoys a good mathematical challenge, this course is for you! A13 Word for Word (3-5)

Let’s have some fun with language! Students in this class will experience literacy from a wide range of experiences. Students will read and write, but that’s not all! This class is an activity-oriented way to use language skills across many areas. Participants will participate in reader’s theater, storytelling, vocabulary games, and more. 

A14 Science Explorations (3-5)

Move over, Einstein! Students in Science Exploration will have hands-on opportunities to explore basic concepts of physics and environmental science. Kids will conduct experiments to learn about electricity, magnetism, water pressure and air, and will also develop knowledge about environmental issues.

A18 Harry Potter (4-5) 

Now that you have read the books written by J.K. Rowling; it’s time for you to head off to Hogwarts’ District 30 campus! The Sorting Hat will sort you into a house and the weeks will be filled with activities that every Potter fan will love! We will make crafts, play games, test our trivia knowledge, compete in challenges and scavenger hunts, and more! Register now to ensure an owl delivers your acceptance letter! 

A19 Bluestem Book Club (3-4)

The Bluestems are a readers’ choice award for middle-grade novels in Illinois. In this course, students will read their way through a variety of Bluestem Award nominees, discussing and sharing their passion for reading great books. Do not miss this chance to experience some of the best in youth literature!


Art/Music/Theater Focused

A12 You CAN Draw (3-5) *

Everyone has their own unique style of drawing. Students will explore and improve all facets of their style using people, objects, landscapes, patterns and the abstract as their subject. A variety of drawing materials from inks, pastels, sharpies, paints, and pencils will be used. Learn to be comfortable in your own style and you will be amazed at what you CAN draw! *There is an additional $10 supplies and materials fee.


Social Studies Focused

A15 Random Acts of Kindness (3-5) *Cancelled*

It’s no secret. This world needs more love and kindness, and this course is for kids who believe the same! Whether supporting others within the summer school community or beyond, students in this class will learn and practice the joy of uplifting and serving others.  


Movement Focused

A16 Basketball (3-4) 

It's time for tip-off! In this basketball clinic, students will work on the fundamentals of dribbling, passing, shooting, and basketball game sense. This course will offer a variety of experiences including physical conditioning, drills, and scrimmages. All skill levels are welcome!

A17 Fun on the Field (3-4) *Cancelled*

Students will enjoy activities, adventures, teamwork, and fitness as they take advantage of the beautiful sun and fun in the outdoor athletic fields at Maple. Walking, running, playing, and jumping will just be the beginning of the activities we have in store for them! Sports such as soccer, football, softball, rugby, capture the flag, ultimate frisbee, and disc golf may be enjoyed during this class.

A20 Caudill Book Club (5-8)

The Caudills are a readers’ choice award for upper-grade novels in Illinois. In this course, students will read their way through a variety of Caudill Award nominees, discussing and sharing their passion for reading great books. Do not miss this chance to experience some of the best in youth literature!

A22 Science Challenges (6-8)

Students will engage in a variety of STEM-based design and construction challenges. This hands-on class will allow students to work individually and collaboratively through the engineering design process to create a product to meet the challenge's criteria and constraints. Students will have fun testing and evaluating their designs while also competing against the peers. This class will hone student's creativity, perseverance and engineering skills.

A27 Middle School Readiness (6)

Students will learn the necessary skills to help them be successful in middle school. Lessons will cover organization, time management, study strategies, decision making, goal setting, and much more. Students will have an opportunity to learn about the middle school academic classes, athletics, extra-curricular activities, schedules, grades, technology, and locks/lockers.

Art/Music/Theater Focused

A24 Summer Band (7-8) *Cancelled*

This course is open to any incoming 7th or 8th grade student playing a band instrument with at least one year playing experience. We will learn and perform music in a variety of styles. Let's have some fun making music this summer!

Social Studies Focused

AB21 Service Learning (6-8)

Pay it forward! This two-block course (A & B)  is designed and implemented by students who want to get involved in their community. Students research different charities in the area, set up fundraising events at Maple, and if current health and safety regulations allow, we travel to different organizations, such as the local food pantry, animal shelters, or assisted-living homes. 

A25 Life Skills (6-8)

Welcome to life (the stuff they DON’T teach you in school)! Join us for a fun role-play where you will take a career survey to find your dream job. With your teacher's help, you will decide where you'd like to live, create a budget, find an apartment, buy a car (if needed), apply for a credit card, open a bank account, register to vote, and set up your new life! Once you've created your possible future life, you will practice real-life skills such as cooking a basic meal, car maintenance, and more.


Movement Focused

A26 Yoga and Mindfulness (6-8)

Take it to the mat! Classes explore yoga poses, breathing exercises, visual imagery and relaxation techniques while conveying lessons in self-expression, body image, positive thinking, and environmental awareness. All participants should bring a yoga mat (which can be left in the classroom, if needed). Namaste!

A28 Net & Ball Sports (5-6)

Do you love team and individual sports like pickleball, badminton, or volleyball? This course will offer a variety of experiences with physical activities including drills, scrimmages, and game play. All skill levels are welcome!
