Interesting Social Media Statistics:
Project Description: I had to deep dive into the impacts of social media and how it affects society.
Social Media Survey: While I was taking the survey I realized that I wasn't nearly as dependent upon social media as I thought I was. Although, the survey told me, "You're fairly reliant on social media, but there are far worse culprits." I honestly wasn't shocked when it said that an average person spends 8 hrs and 41 mins on a screen every day. I feel like everyone's lives are surrounded by a screen and need to connect to life more. When it asked if I needed to rethink my social media habits. I thought, yes, I check every once and a while if someone liked my story or sent me a video. But it's nowhere near as bad as other people's use.
I found it pretty interesting that they did it by political party. I think I would fit in with the adults that think that its mostly negative. Although I did find it interesting that they didn't include adults that are not affiliated with a political party. But otherwise, the results did not shock me.
I picked this one because I found it intresting with the age groups. Honestly, I was kind of shocked that YouTube had a higher percentage for my age group than say Instagram or snapchat. I was not at all shocked that the age groups 50-64 and 30-49 use Facebook more often though.
Social Media's Impact on Society: As I slightly touched on earlier, I believe that our society has become too dependent upon social media and their screens. Yes, you can reach more people and connect with a wider variety, that you may not have been able to reach in the real world. Every positive has negatives though. Through social media and our screens, we have become less empathetic when it comes to other people's thoughts and feelings. Now a days when it comes down to it, we can say almost anything we want without consequence and just hide behind a screen. One more thing that tags along with social media and the use of our screens would be the fact that as technology evolves, we lose our ability to make connections in the real world. We become too dependent on our fake social media reality and AI (which is a whole separate pressing issue), that we no longer know how to interact in public with strangers. I witness it firsthand at my job, I feel that if we weren't so addicted to our screen less people would treat the cashiers poorly and be able to comprehend that they have feelings too. Not all of this is a result of social media dependence, but it plays a HUGE role.
Lesson Learned: The lesson that I learned through this assignment would be that as society evolves, we start to lose our sense of self and awareness. To be completely frank, I even catch myself making non-empathetic remarks to myself towards people online. The other day my friend and I had to ask a stranger if we could park in the spot where were, and it took SIX people to pass us before we worked up the courage. I just learned that we need to wake up if society is going to continue to function.
