Week 3 - Exposure & Lighting
Week 3 - Exposure & Lighting
Objective: Film 2 scenes featuring each aspect of a thorough lighting setup with appropriate camera settings
Example 1: For this example, I wanted to depict an outer space tea party with Baby Yoda and his glowy alien cat friend. I wanted it to appear as if the cat was lighting the entire scene and "pulsating" light. The toy I used only glows with a static light if you want one color (it can rotate through multiple on a timer, but I wanted him to remain blue throughout this scene). In order to do this, I utilized a set of LED lights that I have in my bedroom set to pulsate a similar blue color as the cat to achieve this effect, and placed the scene in front of these lights. You can see how I set this up in the pictures below. I also added a subdued keylight in the front of the scene using the flashlight on my phone covered with an index card and held in place with a phone stand. To complete the setup, I also added a fill light pointing away from the scene towards the wall, again with an index card to soften the light and prevent shadows on the characters. This helped to add a but of dimension and definition. I filmed on a Nikon D3500 for this project. The camera settings were f-stop: 5.6; SS-: 1/50; ISO: 113; ISO-A: 8000; FR: 24fps; resolution: 1080p.
Example 2: For this example, I kept the tea theme going but this time my idea was to create a shot that might be used in an advertisement. To achieve this, I wanted to have bright, direct lighting, but to reduce the reflections and shadows as much as possible without it looking unrealistic. In addition to the overhead light, I used one of my side table lamps for their warm tones, which combined act as the keylight. I also used a white table cloth to help reflect some of the light back up. I used the same portable lights as in the first example, but this time I lightly wrapped them in paper towels to diffuse some of the harshness while still keeping them pointed directly on the scene. I also propped the camera at a slight downwards angle while filming. I used the same camera as above with settings of f-stop: 5.6; SS: 1/50; ISO: 6; ISO-A: 5000; FR: 24fps; resolution: 1080p.
Objective: Embed YouTube clips of 3 scenes from a movie, show, or artwork and describe something interesting about the lighting setup
The lighting in this scene is interesting because the room has a bluish tint to it, so there must be a blue backlight being used, but it also seems like the keylight that is illuminating the actors has a bit of yellow in it for contrast.
This scene uses full daylight. It also uses lens flare artistically to depict the tired, hurried, and confused state of mind of the main character. Start clip around 2:50 to see this effect.
There are a lot of lights going on in this scene including a disco ball and flashing background lights. There is even a "streetlamp" serving as motivated lighting.
