Week 2 - Camera & Video Capture Settings
Week 2 - Camera & Video Capture Settings
***For this project, all examples were recorded on my iPhone 7 Plus using the Filmic Pro app.
Low Light
For the light light example, I decided I wanted to shoot a scene where the light source was candlelight. I wanted it to have an intimate, somewhat somber affect. To achieve this, I found a dark spot on my house as I was recording during daylight hours. Then, I put a lit candle in the foreground with my baby Yoda toy in the midground, with a white wall for the background. I think this example shows the limitations of the iPhone 7 Plus' camera because you can see a lot of noise in this clip, especially in the darkest portions of the image. I tried to lower the ISO to reduce this, but then the scene was too dark and you couldn't really see anything.
Settings:
White Balance: Auto
ISO: 375
Frame Rate: 24 fps
Shutter Speed: 1/24
F-Stop: default for iPhone 7 Plus
Resolution: 1080p
Full Daylight
I think this example turned out the best compared to the others depicted here. I turned down the ISO and shutter speed because it was really sunny outside and wanted a really crisp, focused image rather than a really washed out one.
Settings:
White Balance: Auto
ISO: 25
Frame Rate: 24 fps
Shutter Speed: 1/2304
F-Stop: default for iPhone 7 Plus
Resolution: 1080p
Shallow Depth of Field
For this shot, I was in my living room with natural daylight coming in through the windows on the left hand side. I increased the ISO a bit compared to the full daylight shot. I also increased the shutter speed as well since it was not direct sunlight. I put my iPhone in a stand so I could use both hands. This helped me to bring baby Yoda closer to the camera, which helped increase the focus on him and decrease the focus on the background to create the shallow depth of field effect.
Settings:
White Balance: Auto
ISO: 50
Frame Rate: 24 fps
Shutter Speed: 1/24
F-Stop: default for iPhone 7 Plus
Resolution: 1080p
Fast Action Shot
For this example, I recorded my cat Tobey playing with a peacock feather. It was a bit darker in this area of my house compared to the shallow depth of field shot, so I increased the ISO. I also increase the frame rate and shutter speed to capture his motions more smoothly. I'm surprised at the amount of noise in this shot because I didn't think it was that dark of an area, but decreasing the ISO any further made the scene appear darker in the recording than in real life which hid details that I wanted to capture, similar to the low light example.
Settings:
White Balance: Auto
ISO: 175
Frame Rate: 60 fps
Shutter Speed: 1/60
F-Stop: default for iPhone 7 Plus
Resolution: 1080p
Challenges & Solutions: As mentioned above, I was surprised and frustrated at how much noise was appearing in shots that used anything other than full sunlight. I also noticed that the app didn't give me a lot of options in how to adjust the ISO (I'm using the free trial at the moment, so that may be why?). It was also interesting to me that except for the full daylight shot, the shutter speed that looked the best was equal to the frame rate, since it was recommended in the lesson videos to try to have a higher shutter speed compared to frame rate. Overall, I didn't feel like I had to a lot of control of the settings with my phone/app to really get the look I wanted. Moving forward, I plan on using a DSLR which will hopefully provide some solutions to these issues.
