Welcome!

Welcome to ""Creating Accessible Learning Environments". This site was created to better equip teaching faculty and other educators in a postsecondary setting with a greater understanding of disability, the educational barriers of students with disabilities, and to offer effective teaching strategies for advancing the persistence and success of individuals with disabilities in higher education, a traditionally under-served population.

Pascuala Herrera, a Professor at William Rainey Harper College and an Accessibility Specialist working in the Access and Disability Services (ADS) department since 1991, produced this Sabbatical project in Spring 2017, conveying her 30 years of experience of removing barriers to success, inciting advocacy, eliminating prejudices, and stimulating empathy for this wide and diverse world we live in.

Although this site is intended for faculty, the information and strategies are applicable to all educators. This site can be used in its entirety or in separate pieces for a more in-depth understanding on a specific disability. This resource is not exhaustive and cannot possibly include all types of disabilities. However, it does include the most common types of disabilities or those disabilities that experience greater challenges because of inaccessible environments. We encourage you to embrace inclusion in every appropriate setting. It will change your world and the world of your students, coworkers, and community.
