Reviewing: Kingspray Graffiti VR by Moraza, Juan, https://var.juanmoraza.com/studentchoice
For this week I will be reviewing Kingspray Graffiti VR. This is a VR app that allows the user to create street art in a virtual environment. The reason this caught my eye so fast was that its something that can easily be done in VR and it doesn’t require the user to move around. The big thing about this VR experience is how realistic it is. When you use a can of spray paint it feels like you are really using one since you have to hold a cylinder controller and use the trigger to spray the paint. This is just like the can that holds the paint and the controller trigger is the nozzle. The environment looks very incredible, for the light reflecting off the walls, the textures and all the little details and objects like trash and grass. All while running at a very smooth frame rate.
I think the one thing that doesn’t fit well with me is how the people look when you are doing are online. This is mostly because of how they look. They look like ghosts with their floating head and arm. It also doesn’t help that they are transparent. For me, this is something that takes you away from the illusion that you are really standing in front of a wall on top of a building. I think if the developers were to give those avatars more human-like models, I think this would give more of the illusion that you are in the real world and make users more engaged in the world. People have also complained that the app is a little buggy and that you are not able to spray paint everything in the environment which also takes away from the VR.
There are things that you can do in this app but not real life. Stuff like saving you art. If an artist makes street art, it doesn’t last forever. Things like weather, people painting over their art or having that wall taken down but this isn’t a problem since they are able to save their work. Another feature is being able to redo and undo, something that a street artist would love to have in real life. They can also take 360 photos of their art as well.
I believe this application was created for artistry people and people who do real street art. Since using the controller feels just like using a real spray can, they are able to get their fixed need for spray painting this way. I believe that this is great for real street artiest because they are able to practice their art and not have to waste supplies. This is also an alternative for those who like to spray paint and don’t want to get into illegal trouble.
The great thing about Kingspray Graffiti VR is that you are able to bring in three other people with you into order to do you are. This makes the app more fun and appealing for the users. They are able to make art creating together and I believe VR is better when you’re doing stuff with real people. It makes it feel that you are all in the same place all helping each other make awesome art. Another great VR aspect for this app is that you don’t need to physically move your legs to fully enjoy this app. Since they are in front of a wall most of the time, the user does not need to move to step forward which avoids them from stepping in front or smashing their controller.
Overall, I think the developers did a great job with what they did. They knew their target audience and they capitalized on it. I think if they made little changes like with the aviators and being able to spray everything in the playable area. It would make a great viral reality environment,
