Reflection On My Teaching Practice
Reflection On My Teaching Practice
“We do not learn from experience... we learn from reflecting on experience.”
— John Dewey
Upon joining The University of the West Indies after relocating to the vibrant island of Trinidad and Tobago, I quickly recognized the importance of adapting my teaching practices to meet the expectations of higher education. Having not previously received formal training in pedagogy, this transition demanded a substantial shift in my approach to teaching and learning. To support this professional growth, I enrolled in the Certificate in University Teaching and Learning (CUTL) program, which has been pivotal in shaping and refining my teaching philosophy. Through CUTL, I transitioned from traditional lecture-driven methods to a more student-centered, technology-integrated, and interactive style of teaching—greatly enhancing student engagement and the overall learning experience.
This section of my portfolio presents a personal and evolving reflection on key aspects of my academic teaching journey. Each subsection explores a critical area of professional development—from incorporating feedback from students and peers to integrating educational technology, designing fair assessments, refining grading strategies, and addressing broader pedagogical themes. These reflections are grounded in real experiences, informed by constructive feedback, and guided by a continuous commitment to improving teaching and learning in higher education.
