Margaret Dewes is a Waikato-born kiwi gal who didn't know whether to aim for the sticks in the south island wilderness or to enter the mystical cave of theatre. She kinda ended up doing both - traipsing to the London International School of Performance Arts for two years everyday, in gumboots.
Abroad in Europe for 15 years, she studied dance, physical theatre, improvisation, somatic practices and nutrition. Working with inspiring teachers and collaborators, her horizon opened to the vast and intricate landscapes of body, breath, voice and health.
On returning to New Zealand in 2020, Margaret discovered ConTact C.A.R.E and immediately felt its resonance. Her years of embodied training fed directly into this work and gave her a foundation from which everything could integrate.
She now practises primarily through home visits, working with the unique nature of each client—welcoming the new learnings that arrive with every set of footprints, or hoof-prints.
She continues her movement practise, particularly in the martial arts, and collaborates with a great bunch of artists throughout NZ. She regularly holds workshops and is devoted to her friends, community, and the soil from where her feet came from.
Alongside this work, Margaret maintains an ongoing relationship with performance and collaboration, which continues to inform her embodied practice.
