You can use the book you just bound in the last section or buy a notebook. To set up the cover of the book you will need stationery supplies of your choosing for decoration, glue, scissors, markers, and other decorating things. Pictures from old books, cereal boxes, drawings, ribbon, and stickers are things you can use to decorate. How you decorate the book is up to you and you can be creative as you want. Write names on the back of the cover on the inside. Let all the things you placed on your book dry and set it aside.
Junk journals can get thick, so you will need to have a string to hold it together. For this you will need something that you can make holes into the cover of the book (scissors, exacto knife, or pens would work), a brad pin, plastic or cardboard, and string of some kind to hold it together. Use whatever you have on hand. Stretchy strings probably would work the greatest, but it’s possible to use. On the back cover near the foreedge of the book (opposite to the spine) poke a hole into the cover. Poke a hole into the cover as close as possible to be across from it. Tie the string behind the back cover of the book. Now you can add charms to the string to make it more personalized or keep it plain. Now take the plastic or cardboard you have and cut it into a circle with a diameter around an inch. Poke a hole in the middle of your circle for your brad pin to fit through and put your brad pin in it. Don’t separate the prongs of the pin. Put the brad pin into the hole on the front cover of the book. Separate the prongs. Pull the string around the foredge of the book, and wrap it around the brad pin 5 times. Cut the string.
To add to your junk journal, you will need to have scraps or drawings of things that happen from the day your entry is for. Tape or glue all your items down on the day and label it with the date. Let the pages dry before closing the book to avoid the pages from sticking together.
This can be done on a field trip with your troop collecting items you use from the day or have girls bring their journals to another meeting and show one of their entries.
You’ll need your journals, glue, scissors, pens or markers, and plastic bags if you do it as a troop. Bring them somewhere fun or to a trip that was already planned. As you go on with your day, girls will collect items to put in their bag. Packaging from a snack, a ticket, or a flyer are some examples.
Take your junk journal, glue, scissors, pens or markers, and a plastic bag to a park, hiking trail, or camping site. Troop leaders bring an extra bag for anything that would not be safe in a junk journal, old cigars, electronics, fold, etc. As you walk around your area, pick up trash and put it into your bag. After you adventure around, find somewhere to rest. Go to a page of your junk journal and add an entry for the day. Throw away the trash in the extra bag or anything that isn’t wanted from the bags.
